I have a question about farm tracks. I’ve been adding a few in my vicinity because we have a lot of lorries travelling in and out, and it makes sense to route down to the farm so they know exactly where the turn is e.g.
When I first drove up to this I was surprised to see it on the map and my question is whether that is too much detail. I’ve had a search for farm tracks and guidance there but didn’t see anything (but I might have done a ‘man search’ as my wife regularly points out, so apologies if I’ve missed anything).
I know that kieranrawley has updated the road in the second example (and I’ve flagged it and it is now definitely private) but I’d be curious about the wider guidance on what to do with these sorts of roads.
I would simply add them as private roads. I would not personally add them for single dwellings unless the driveway is larger or there is a lot of traffic that might use the road - perhaps for deliveries or a small set of offices that you often find in rural or farm locations.
What you probably wish to avoid is having them as unpaved roads where Waze might use them as short cuts if the app settings are not to avoid unpaved roads.
If they are used to access an address by car then yes, map as private roads.
Farm tracks going between fields etc do not need to be mapped.
Note that ‘unpaved’ is now a segment attribute so it can be applied to any road type. You can therefore use it on private roads where appropriate if it is unpaved but still driveable in a normal car. This will add a further penalty so does mean that if there is another paved route available Waze will nearly always choose that.
The ‘Off-road’ segment type (sometimes called ‘dirt road’) is now intended only for lanes that are not suitable for a car, i.e. only for 4x4s. In the UK this is likely just to be public byways but because the unpaved attribute is fairly new there are still some on the map that should really be unpaved.
