Morning All
Farm Lanes, this is something I have been pondering over for the last lot of days while naming a lot of ‘rural roads’ in sunny Northern Ireland. Basically, I think, we have a rather unique problem, in that, a lot of our lane ways run through farms and are un-named (even on the OSNI maps). Around the area I live and drive I know many of them have unofficial names but I won’t be giving them those as it would just confuse people.
But anyway on to the question, do we draw them in? They are perfectly navigable and they are rights of way so there is no issue there, many are ‘dirt roads’ and would be labeled as such. The next question would be, if we add those, do we add long driveways to private properties as many of these look like road junctions.
Your thoughts as always will be greatly appreciated.

I wish you joy in Northern Ireland, having been there I know just how inadequate the original Waze base map was.
For what little it’s worth, my thoughts are:
-
ideally all roads that people might reasonably think they could drive down should be on the map.
-
this includes private drives which might be mistaken for public roads (perhaps on a wet night when signs are not obvious), If they are mapped as private roads, Waze won’t encourage their use, but if someone goes down one by mistake, Waze will know where they are and help them out.
-
I don’t see any problem with recording unofficial local names for roads with no name signs. The only thing I would say is that where there is a road name sign (not common in NI I know), the signed name should be used on Waze whatever the locals call it.

you won’t have time to do everything, and need to prioritise; last time I looked there were ‘A’ roads missing from the NI map, and getting them right is more important than mapping farm lanes (even if less fun).
I think you have endless and pretty thankless task, good luck!
Hi,
^^^ What he said ^^^
Certainly you may need to prioritise your tasks, but if passing a country lane or whatever then pop the entrance section on the map so that it will show from the main road.
Once major and minor roads are complete (and towns and villages) then they can more easily be picked up on and completed at a later stage, or when correcting/updating the towns etc.
Luck and welcome on board.

I would agree with all that ditchi says. I know a couple of the other CMs have been helping out in NI recently too so it should hopefully have had a bit of a kickstart!
Thanks guys!
I was thinking along the same lines about naming them and also the long drives but will leave them until I have sorted as many of the named roads as possible without my head exploding. Been concentrating on streets in towns and cities so far with little trips along the main roads.
The main Infrastructure doesn’t seem to be too bad these days, mainly just dodgy geometry which is a pleasant thing to fix… so I’ll just press on as I am for now!
Thanks again!
