One of the things I’d like to be able to do is have friends/family be able to see my current location on the live map. I thought I’d be able to do this just by going to “live map” and ensuring that the “Wazers” option was marked. But, no luck–I’ve got Waze running on my device, and it shows that I’m connected and it’s got a GPS fix, but I don’t show up on the map (nor do any other Waze users).
Is there a way to do this with Waze? Alternatively, can anyone recommend a service that will allow me to do this?
Hi Josh, when you are looking at the live map, you are only going to see the last 10 wazers, if this option is checked at the top of the map. The wazers are close to their locations on the map, but do not show exact location where the wazer is for privacy. You may see yourself on the map amongst the thousands of the wazers out there wazing, but there is no way at this time to see just yourself or friends on the map. I will take that idea back to the team and maybe that can be an added feature for future release.

If it’s available in your city, Foursquare is also worth checking out. It’s based on places (i.e., checking in to a certain bar or restaurant) rather than simply location, but the clients will find nearby landmarks based on location data. It also has systems for points and badges, so going to lots of places and checking in gets you rewards and such. And if you have the most check-ins at one particular place, you get to be the Mayor!
It’s on iPhone and Android right now, I’m not sure what device you use. You can also check in via mobile web, I think. Plus, it supports push notifications on iPhone, so if your friends are out too they can see what you’re up to! Pretty neat. Check out http://foursquare.com/.
Edit: Whoa, is the first sample screenshot on http://www.google.com/latitude/intro.html in New Orleans for everyone, or is it just tailoring it to me? Pretty cool either way, though the latter’s a little creepy!
hi sketch - actually we are talking to foursquare about co-promotion and are currently looking into their APIs. Seems like we’ll integrate the checkin capability into waze, right from within the ‘Report’ menu, so if you like them, and use them you won’t have to leave waze to checkin to places. There’ll be a waze badge on Foursequare too.
Ya, I would love to see waze add the capability to allow you to create a small network of to see each others online location as you drive. I travel a lot with friends in different cars and it would be awesome to see each others progress to a destination.
