Forum/Info search; newbies

I am sorry but as new user I have difficulties to search/find/follow any discussion.

Hooops… greetings to everybody.

I think I have a lot of newbies, standard or stupid questions.

I did try to surf the wase website and I found it a bit difficult
to navigate in the search of my newbies/std/odds answers.

The most difficult part is in being able to distinguish a newbies
question from a technical one.

More over the forum does not let me search for these words:
gps, live, update, map, how to. Within others.
So I couldn’t search for a difference between live and update maps.

I am not the person who has to reorganize the wase community,
but if you feel like helping me; here are a couple of suggestions:

  • Create sticky discussions on the forum branches.
  • Create links from the wiki to these sticky discussions, when appropriate.
  • Separate the newcomers from the general discussion.
  • Do not ignore the wase keywords in the search: live map and update map
are two concepts within wase: I want to be able to search them.
GPS might be too general, what about suggesting me: device, accuracy,
    client problem?

I do not have time. But I will try to support this community.
Independently from the answers

For better maps!

Hi
These are all good and valid points. We are working on improving the search for the forum, and most definitely we should support search of basic keywords like ‘map editor’.
There is a ‘newcomer’ section in the forum, and we should post some stickies to the wiki that explain the basic stuff - http://www.waze.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=13 - I will work on that. Do you think the newcomers should be separated from the ‘general discussion’ and have its own forum?

I think a better investment would be clearer instructions for newbies. We see the same questions over and over again because it’s -not explained on the website-. There really needs to be clearer instructions which are for complete newbies which are made VERY easy to find for someone who won’t bother to look at things like wiki’s, or bother to trawl through the forums. And the location of this information should be e-mailed to every user who registers with Waze.

Some suggestions of things which are NOT obvious, and need to be spelled out:

1.) What happens to a newly recorded road after you record it in the client.
2.) Why things take 24-48 hours to show up.
3.) What “Cartouche” is. (Took me about 2 weeks to work that out because it WASN’T on the website, and it wasn’t on the wiki. We assume everyone knows that it’s the map editing software, but you need to spell this stuff out for people.)
4.) What the “dashboard” is, and what it stores.
5.) How to find your “archived” routes. It’s kind of clear but not THAT clear.
6.) I’ve been doing this since November and I STILL don’t know what the colours of the recorded road segments mean when adding new road segments. I can guess, but that stuff should be in the “tutorial” too.
7.) How to do simple things like how to change geography, name the road, choose the right type, etc. There’s some good videos about it, but I didn’t know about them until the creator mentioned them in a forum post. If you’re not the sort of person who likes trawling through forums, you’re not going to see this unless you’re pointed to it.

+1 to zzyzxuk’s suggestions

From me too… +1

I agree…waze has a steep learning curve which intimidates people and can scare them off…I’m slowly figuring out how to find this information, but a really easy way to figure it out (like stickies in the forum) would make it easier!

Ops… I didn’t want to get too complicated.

Yes, I do thing that general matters has nothing to do with new people.

Or at least at this level of development.

I give you two simple real examples:

  1. what happen to my “update map” once I do my updates?

  2. I keep having a server error while trying to insert a junction?

(Ok, the second might go to the map editor stuff, you call it cartouche)
but let me feel it like a general discussion problem.

Yes, I would like to have answers, but proper answers.
This is why I prefer a simple and full of words answer to question (1)
and a bit more technical answer to question (2).

In the general matters: I can use waze only with google-chrome
and not with my normal preffered firefox. (under linux).

Yes. I will, would distinguish newbies from general matters.

It is better for me and waze.
