"Frontage Rd" Vs. Actual Address

I’ve been unable to find any clear answer on this in the forum; I’m finding that Places have a mixture of actual addresses (e.g., ##### North I-35, Austin, Texas) listed as:

I-35 S (or N), Austin, Texas

or

Frontage Rd., Austin, Texas

What is the correct way to list them? I’m finding a mixture. :?

The address can use the cardinal direction as appropriate and based on the existing road segments along the route. Typically, there are no address attached to the frontage road and are not valid addresses either.

The address should be matched to the place itself and in the absence of that, matched to the existing road segment(s).

Just so I am clear; when you say it can “use the cardinal direction”. Does that mean as the address is listed or the the direction listed on the closest segment.

Their actual address is: 2004 North I-35, Round Rock, TX 78681. However, they are closest to (excluding the Frontage Rd) IH-35 S.

I just want to be sure I completely understand before I start correcting. :ugeek:

Thanks!

For a Place, the actual address of the business/residence should be used to avoid confusion to Wazers. Waze is going to route to the Place marker if it’s a business and that business name is used for the search.

So, in this instance, someone would search for La Quinta and should see the actual, physical address they would find on the La Quinta website.

Thanks for the helpful response!

Sorry, after re-reading this I need a little more clarification.

The problem is that the address on the website is - 2004 North I-35
As of right now, only “I-35 N” or “I-35 S” are options referring to the direction of traffic, of course.
Are you suggesting that I add “North I-35” or “N I-35” as the address of the Place, even though “I-35 S” is the closest segment?

Thanks.

I-35 N since that is the correct address and matches the nearby road segments. It’ll still route to the marker here.

Thanks again. I’m just a little OCD.

Don’t we all.

The way I understand it “I-35 N” and “N I-35” do not mean the same thing. Using the N or S at the end refers to the direction of travel as in “northbound” and “southbound”. That’s how Waze labels the interstates and I think that’s how most people would interpret it.

However, when the N or S appears before the I-35 in an address, it refers to a particular section of the interstate. The address itself can be on either the northbound or southbound side depending on whether it’s odd or even.

Here’s the Williamson County GIS: https://maps.wilco.org/countymap/default.aspx
And the Austin Jurisdiction map: http://www.austintexas.gov/GIS/JurisdictionsWebMap/
I can’t find a way to permalink it, but if you zoom in until you can see the address markers along the interstate then you’ll see what I mean. Also note that each city has it’s own North and South section of I-35. So N I-35, Austin is actually south of S I-35, Round Rock which is south of N I-35, Georgetown. Each of those sections might also have it’s own street address range, so “1100 N I-35, Austin”, “1100 S I-35, Austin”, and “1100 N I-35, Round Rock” are very different locations.

For that reason, I would argue that the address on a place should be listed as it is on the website, which has to use the N/S in front of the I-35 to disambiguate. I wouldn’t worry about adding a N or S at the end of the address to indicate the direction. As long as the place location is correct, Waze will route it to the correct side, and the driving directions will use “I-35 N” or “I-35 S” names on the interstate segments as needed. The address on the place is only for search purposes and not for routing (as I understand it).

And technically it’s “Interregional Highway” and not “Interstate” 'round here so the official address will be listed as IH-35 and not I-35. But even I draw the line here and just call it “I-35” to be consistent.

I’ve had that discussion many times with other high ranking editors and they don’t believe me until I show them signs where it’s marked “IH-XX” and they’re still in disbelief (more so that it’s done that way).
