Guidance on dealing with picture submissions

I’ve had a look around and I can’t see any, hence the question.

A few pictures have been submitted in my area and I’m not sure what to do with them.

One’s been submitted of Caernarfon Castle which I think is ok.
Nearby there’s one of the petrol station at Morrisons, and I’m not sure of the value of it?
There’s also one at another petrol station and again, I’m not sure it helps?

What’s the general approach on these? Don’t want to upset anyone’s feelings but don’t want to add stuff that isn’t useful.
Thanks
Martin

I don’t think I’ve seen any official UK guidance so I generally only approve pictures if I think they will help users find their destination which means I would not approve the petrol stations. I’d also struggle with the Castle, anyone looking out their car window will see the castle and should realise they have reached their destination without having to check a poor quality picture on their sat nav. Likewise I never approve pictures of McDonalds or supermarkets, if you are close enough to see the big McDonalds sign then that should be good enough.

There is some guidance in the in the Wiki although I’m not sure it’s very helpful, I think they have the first good and bad pictures the wrong way round, if you are close enough to read the sign how is the picture going to help whereas the picture marked as bad, well if that is what you’ll see as you are driving past it could be helpful.

I think the wiki example is fine - the “bad” image really is bad, as it just looks like a completely generic street which could probably be mistaken for the same spot on the next road over, whereas the “good” image quite clearly shows the on-site signage for that destination - if you’ve pulled up alongside and you see that sign out your window, having it also shown as the photo for your destination in Waze is pretty much 100% confirmation that you’re at the right place.

So if a photo is one that can easily be used to identify the destination - e.g. the one of Caernarfon Castle - and doesn’t breach any of the guidance regarding content that shouldn’t be accepted, then I’d say it’s worth accepting even if it does seem like having it associated with the Waze place is gilding the lily.

For similar reasons, I’d probably also approve the photo of the second petrol station - it isn’t brilliant given that it seems to have been taken from the car park, but it does at least show most of the station canopy/site which give you a reasonable idea what to be looking for, and it doesn’t prevent someone else from submitting a better quality photo later on. However, for the Morrisons station, I’d say reject - as with the bad photo example from the Wiki, this one could be mistaken for pretty much any Morrisons petrol station in the country, rather than being useful as a means of identifying this specific one.

In general, I think the suggestion was made back when photos were first introduced, that we shouldn’t reject photos unless they really were poor quality or broke the rules on what couldn’t be shown, as if an editor received too many rejections it could result in their account being black-flagged. Not sure if that was ever the case, or if it’s still true now if it was back then, but I’d suggest that even if Waze themselves don’t place any value in tracking how many rejections a user gets, that user might well do so themselves - would you want to continue submitting what you consider to be valuable place data if you’re constantly having your submissions rejected? So I think erring on the side of caution here isn’t a bad thing - and having partially useful data is still better than having none at all, no?

A personal opinion, not CM official policy.

Photos are IMHO a complete waste of time. However, the app encourages people to submit them, so it’s not really for us to reject them if they are of reasonable quality, show the right place (amazing how many don’t), and don’t breach the guidelines.

What I personally tend to do is (and again this is me, not policy), if I approve a photo, I then go to the place and look at all the photos for it, and usually delete all but the best. So sometimes I approve a photo and then delete it straight afterwards.

Sometimes I’ll leave more than one photo, if for example they show different angles or different approaches. Plus if there’s a really nice picture, I’ll leave that too, but nice pictures are sadly rare.

That’s pretty much the way I deal with pictures. Don’t think they’re a total waste of time it’s a small value added
