Hi from new editor

Hi all,

Got the Waze app a bit over a month ago, and have recently started a few minor map edits. I drive about 25K miles a year, mostly between Preston and Runcorn on the M6, M56 and other North West motorways, so those are the regions I’ll be able to contribute the most to.

I’ve found my way to this forum via the feed on WME, via Discord #general, via advice from an AM in the USA, via the #united-kingdom channel, where I made contact with my AM kkervinjones, who told me that this was the best place to introduce myself! Sheesh - if only I had some sort of navigation tool which could have helped me get to where I needed to go without all those twists and turns

Anyway, I see there are more posts here about how to edit in the UK, so I’ll give those a read (already been on the wiki). I’ve already added a couple of places and footpaths to get the hang of it.

Mostly just interested in how as a lvl1 I can use my local knowledge to help with the map in the right way.

Hello and welcome

I was like you not too long ago. Keen to start but not too sure where to begin at the same time
Just take your time. Look at things you think need improving work out the best practices. Over time you’ll discover “unwritten rules” in terms of best practice for editing. Little things in the editor that you didn’t realise made such a big difference and a good number of 3rd party scrips and addons that you also collect along the way.

Don’t be afraid to ask even if it does seem like a very mundane question. I think most of the higher ranked editors must be sick of me in the editor request forum by now  but essentially look things over. If you think they need a change and they’re locked above your editor level just request for them to be down-locked in the editor request forum again or if it’s only a minor edit that needs doing and is above your level just ask for someone of the correct rank to be able to do it for you if needed.

Most higher ranked editors are more than happy to give you a hand and will quite happily look over any edits you’ve done, giving constructive feedback on what you did well and things that you might want to look at doing differently in the future. This is also how you often learn all your “unwritten rules” about best ways to do things and where to source info etc.

Most of all you will end up getting addicted to going “oh just one more little edit here” resulting in most of you time being absorbed

Hello

Glad you found the UK Forum.

One tip to help you out with your recent edits, undrivable segments such as footpaths aren’t usually connected to the road network. This is to prevent Waze from routing along them - one of those unwritten rules (I think).

As Waze is geared towards routing drivers from A to B, undrivable segments are only really added if they add value to the map. I usually add them if they have names and may be places users want to navigate to, such as these here.

Anyway, you now know where to find the rest of the UK map editors, so if you have any questions, just ask.

Cheers
Andrew

Hi Jon, (I think it’s Jon from your Discord).

Welcome to Waze editing. Yes, as I said last night, Discord is a new communications channel that the UK community isn’t really using. Discord is mostly used for MapRaids. Glad you found your way here.

I live in Runcorn. I hope you’ve been ok with all the recent roadworks in the area.

If you have any question, please do let us know. We’d rather you ask than do something and make a mistake. As you’ve probably found, the UK Wiki is a goldmine of information.

Andrew is correct that we don’t usually attached footpaths to road segments, but this may change in the future as Waze may be developing walking routes for returning to your car. Footpaths will need to be attached in this case. Indeed, I believe Waze have fixed the issue of Footpaths being routable for driving.

One thing to note about some segments you’ve added so far. It’s general policy in the UK not to enable u-turns. This can cause issues for routing, so keeping them off is important.

I know there’s been some developments in Preston recently, and quite a bit of change is due in the future. Maybe you can check over things locally to ensure everything’s ok. I see you’ve already commented on the map comments there, which is great.

Hope all goes well.

Keith

HI, I’m quite new on here I’ve been using Waze over the last 2 years or so, and very recently starting to use waze as a part of my daily job as the sat nav my work gives me is horrendous, I will be navigating mainly around Prestwich, Urmston, Worsley and Wigan as a delivery driver. I was wondering I have made a few edits recently, I’m wondering how do I level up and become an authorized map editor.
Ed

Hi Ed, by logging in to the Waze Map Editor and making edits you have already become the most official editor Waze has, we are all volunteers. By making more edits you will get the opportunity to rank up and that give you the ability to edit higher locked roads (97.5% of segments are L1).

The Quick Start Guide on Wazeopedia is a good place to begin, have a look over Wazeopedia in general and ask any questions in this area of the UK Forum.

Chris

Thank you all for your responses! It’s been a busy week!

Keith - the Runcorn works must have been giving you kittens! I’ve had no problems navigating thanks. Work is just off the M56 at J12. Happy to keep an eye on the Preston end. I walk my dog where they are about to build the Penwortham Bypass and occasionally stop and chat to the construction workers, so I can definitely get the lowdown on progress. There’s about 2 years to go for all the major works to be complete.

Couple of things I need to figure out next:

  • Driving home tonight I found they have just removed the annoying 40mph average speed camera section on the M6 near J26. Thank goodness I’ll get 20 minutes a day of my life back. Northbound was clear and Southbound they were removing the cones. This was about 22:30. Think I need to find reference to it on the roadworks forum.

  • I’ll go back and tweak the footpaths I added this weekend based on feedback
