Hi - I'm new here

I’m 59, I live in the West Midlands, and I edited my first road last week by accident,

The reason I dug out the Map editor was that I got slightly lost (understatement) in a new estate near Wolverhampton. I hate getting lost, especially when I’m on the ground - it seems so pathetic, as I can usually find my way around even if I have to resort to following my nose, this failed me, so I had to resort to phoning a friend and getting him to leap up and down waving his arms about at the end of his (uncharted!) street.

My background is that I have driven and flown around the UK for the last 40 odd years, using Little Chef road atlases during my repping (pre interweb) years, and also used most of the free and some of the (mostly overrated) paid nav and traffic apps, before finally settling on Waze as the most reliable guide to current location, best routing and most up-to date traffic android app. Literally my only complaint would be the slightly bouncy colour schemes, and even they have grown on me in time.

I worked my way up to Royalty Wazer without editing a single tile, though I did suggest a couple of corrections (my latest involving the correction of a misleading route to my local Brewery - yes really!).

I like maps, and have used all sorts including the UK 250,000 and 50,000 CAA charts for air navigation, and miscellaneous approach plates for instrument navigation, ILS approaches etc, so I know how important accurate guidance can be. Though at least with road navigation, you usually have signs, markings and lane guidance painted on the floor!!

Having broken my duck, I’m now up for general map maintenance and editing, but since I don’t know what I’m doing yet, some guidance from those of you with ‘the knowledge’ would be very welcome.

My new road (now added successfully I think) is Kirton Place, Ettingshall, Wolverhampton, with a few edits of surrounding streets to make it all fit.

So my sum total Waze Map editor experience is - I’ve added a road and saved it.

Feel free to point me in the right direction.

Live long and prosper.

Hi,

Welcome to the world of Waze editing. It’s all down hill for you now…
First thing you should do will be to check outh the Wifi for the guides and policies etc for editing the map Here.
Read and read again. Then using your local area (as you’ll know it best) see how the map has been created with the guidance above (street naming, abbreviations, Places and so on. There’ll also be the announcements near the top of the forum (where that ink came from).

Enjoy yourself and if you need help, shout here.

Des. . .

Welcome,
be warned Waze editing can be highly addictive.
Read through the wiki (link in Des’s post), it’ll be far too much to take in, then take a look at an area you know well. If anything needs improvement, have another read of the appropriate section of the wiki and try to make that improvement. If you’re not sure you’ve got it right post a message with a permalink of where you’ve changed (little chain link symbol in bottom right corner of the editor) and you’ll soon be ready to step it up. Here’s one of Kirton Pl, which looks good to me, by the way.

Read and follow the posts here and on the editor requests forum to get an idea of how the experienced editors do things.

And post any questions here. There is always someone else who has the same question but is afraid to ask.

Have fun!

Welcome aboard, sir!

Hi Bigwol,

Welcome to the Waze Editing Community! My main advice - ask questions! There are no stupid or silly ones - only questions that we’ve probably all asked at some point.

Oh, and read the Wiki.
