The Waze app consistently announces S Street in Richmond, VA, as “South Street.” Since S Street is a block from both R Street and T Street (and several blocks from all the other letters of the alphabet), I’m pretty certain that it should be pronounced “S Street,” and not “South Street.” I just haven’t found the proper place to report it. If this is not an appropriate place to report, please let me know the correct next step.
Hi, I’m a volunteer Waze map editor. Because it’s very common for street names to begin with a directional abbreviation like “S” for “South,” the Waze text-to-speech engine is programmed to assume that’s what an initial S means. The way we tell it not to do that is by changing “S Street” to “S. Street”, which I’ve now done in Richmond. I also changed W and N Streets similarly. (Apparently, in Richmond, the alphabet begins with M, so there is no E Street to fix!)
Thanks for reporting this! (It may take 36-48 hours, sometimes longer, for the corrections to make it into the mobile app.)
E street was renamed Elm street then changed to Main Street. The more you know. Arch, Byrd, Canal, Franklin and Grace had similar beginnings.
And next to M Street is Leigh St, and then Klay…
Thanks for the history – good to know!
And thanks to russblau for knowing how to fix it and then fixing it so quickly.
