Industrial Estates

Good morning,

I’m back with another question!

So when I was driving home yesterday I noticed that a large swathe of land is mapped as an area. This area is the Orchardbank Industrial Estate.

There is a few other industrial estates in Angus that have also been area’ed (?) by another editor and obviously I don’t want to go kamikaze on them until I’ve checked here. I, personally, think that it clutters the map with a large area. It is, infact, an industrial estate but nobody would ever say “Go to x industrial estate” they would just say take me to “Orchardbank Timber” for example. The dark area is quite large in our town, doesn’t QUITE match the area either because it doesn’t go as far out as the dual carriageway.

I’ve attached another permalink here of a Dundee industrial estate that hasn’t been mapped -

This is the Dryburgh Industrial Estate. Less mapped. Less clutter.

So what should I be doing here? I mean I’ll be popping places down for this area anyway but it shows as a large grey box when I’m driving and I just think that 80% of our local drivers most likely won’t need an area for an industrial estate.

Gallagher Retail Park, different thing, but it makes sense to have it area’ed(?) off. People go to that retail park and “browse” the shops. I wouldn’t say take me to Marks and Spencers Food Hall, I’d just say Gallagher Retail Park.

Sorry. A bit long and a lot of examples. I just don’t know if we NEED to have huge areas spanned off.

Much love!

Morning, @LayzeeWayzee !

I am familiar with -> ‘Industrial Estates/Business Parks’ mapping, as i have done over 300+ -> ‘Industrial Estates/Business Parks/Retail Parks’. However, the following will be my own opinion and could vary from area to area and editor to editor.

As i am an Editor from Greater Manchester, i have discussed this with the AM (Scott), and have agreed to map the -> ‘Area Place’, is all good. BUT don’t take my example as a word for your editing area, as some editors in that area may make certain edits in a different way, for me (well in Greater Manchester) i am fine to make all places i want (if they are required).

Industrial Estates/Business Parks/Retail Parks should be mapped as an -> ‘Area’ by just covering the buildings not all the land around it. When creating the -> ‘Area’ make sure to make the points/lines as tight as you can, as this will try to hide the overall outline of the -> ‘Area’, on the App.

I have provided a few examples of where and when an -> ‘Area’ could be mapped. (local area to me as an example because i am too lazy to find it in Manchester, lol).

(Sandbrook Park (Not A Retail Park But Is A Similar Concept):

  • This shows how the -> ‘Area’ is mapped to the exact outline of the buildings with the outline as tight as it can be so “lines” don’t appear as much in the App.

(Stakehill Industrial Estate):

  • This shows an exemption to map just around the buildings there are far too many and would not make sense just to go over the individual buildings, hence it has covered all the area.

(Royal Pennine Trading Estate):

  • This also shows how an Industrial Estate/Business Park is mapped (there are a few around the same area if you want to view).

(The Times Retail Park (Not Mapped):

  • This shows an unmapped retail park, in this case, it is NOT required to be mapped as it only holds Morrisons and B&M which can be mapped as a separate alone Area Place.

I hope this helped you in any way. Any further guidance and support to myself from the Champs if i have got anything incorrect! I am still learning myself on this WME journey lol.

Cheers!

Do you think this looks okay?

I personally would have mapped individual buildings as places, with the business name attached. Area places for larger units, point places for smaller ones. I don’t really see the value in mapping an industrial estate in that way - but that’s just me! A shape that complex will almost certainly not render in the app anything like it looks on WME.

As Gareth has said, industrial parks would usually have the individual buildings mapped as points for the small units and areas for the big units (with the correct name of course). The point of mapping large buildings as areas is so that they can be used as landmarks while navigating. If an entire industrial park is mapped as one place, then this would no longer be possible as place points don’t show on the map.

Mapping multi-unit sites is usually more suited to shopping centres/retail parks. In these cases, the buildings of the retail park would be mapped as one area place and categorised as “shopping centre”. Then, a place point would be placed on top of each individual shop within that area.
