All reduced to level 3 to allow your edits.
Please reply back so I can re-lock once completed.

Another question regarding the nearby Dr. Charles Best Secondary School. What is the reason you locked it to level 3?

Cheers,
HM.

Most of the places I’ve been touching I lock to 3 to prevent lower level editors screwing them up, particularly the target pin for the place. When the places was being updated there were a number of concerns raised about low level editors, and the suggestion was to lock things at a reasonable level. In the UK, there was a low level editor that converted about 4000 area places to points, so there were some very unimpressed senior editors. DocKB had blanket locked existing places in the GVA to L4 a few weeks ago and I’ve asked him to lower it to 3 so I can deal with updates, but I’ve not heard back from him yet.

I’ll repost again once I’ve finished unsplitting.

Hi,

I missed a couple of segments needed to be unlocked and I’ve started unsplitting already. Can these two segments also be lowered to 3:

And it looks like some segments previously selected were not changed. Maybe a problem with the new WME:

Thanks
Kayos

Everything you resent is now level 3.

Regarding the practice of locking all new places to level 3, I don’t know if this is a good idea, as it may prevent lower level approved editors to add or change details on a place.
Isn’t it better to contact the editors who make this change and speak to them not to make those wrong edits?
Here in the GTA is never saw a problem like that. Level 1 and 2 users can have editing experience by adding information on Places, and this is preventing them from doing so.
If there are particular Places that need to be locked for other reasons I would understand, but categorically locking them all doesn’t make sense to me. If yes, why level 3 and not level 4 or 5?

HM.

This segment was missed on the last unlock:

https://www.waze.com/editor/?env=usa&lon=-122.81838&lat=49.26299&layers=4005&zoom=7&segments=62975842

I’ll keep places at a lower level unless there is something unusual.

Thanks
Kayos

Everything is done for the unsplitting and all segments can be returned to automatic.

Thanks,
Kayos

Thanks.
All is lock back to where it was.

Cheers,
HM.

It makes sense to block if space created 2 years ago and all the bugs have been fixed. Why lock level 3 for new places? It is inappropriate.

It doesn’t make sense to lock any places unless there is a good reason to do so.
If the place is sensitive (Airport, Hospital, etc.) or it is suffering from constant bad edits by users.
Other than that, everyone could add missing information and edit them. Keep in mind that Places are very dynamic and change regularly, as businesses open and close, change name and service, hours, etc, and all level of editors should be able to help maintain the accuracy of the Places database on Waze.

This is my two cents and I’m happy to hear if anyone disagree and for what reason.

Thanks,
HM.

Locking places to +L3 was discussed in the past to prevent IGN editors from doing bad edits.

https://www.waze.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=960904#p960904

I also agree, we don’t have a lot of +L3 editors; it would be too much work for something simple as places. The rules for places are easy to follow: proper name, address and location. Having a website, phone number and hours of operation would be bonus.

Locking should only be used for high-valued places or on a case-by-case basis.

I’ll keep them at a lower level unless there is something unusual, for eg, I had one point place at the physical building which had a back lane. The wazer was routed to the back of the building where there was no access to the front. I raised it in the places thread and was told the points shouldn’t be at the physical location, rather the closest navigable entry point to the parking lot. Many I’ve moved to follow that standard and locked at 3.

The reason I push locking COMPLETE (key word here) places to 3 is to prevent “trusted” users and most IGN from approving PUR’s that are incorrect. It may add more work to us editors, but if you go around an area where IGN is active you will find boat loads of poor and very incorrect edits.

The worst I saw was an IGN approved a change that made an airport become a Starbucks… That’s what caused me to get behind the practice.

But again, key word is complete. I.E. address, hours, phone, services. All of it that can be acquired should be input before locking.

I’ve seen a ton of bad places added to the map since the new places feature. I’ve corrected the ones I’ve seen and also add website, phone number, opening times etc where I can find it. The problem I have is once a user is trusted, they can add whatever they like, and an editor does not get to see it. There are also a lot of places that need updating in my area, and some of them are converting rivers to businesses, airports to coffee shops, etc, the list goes on. I fully support locking to a higher level where it makes sense, but L4 does not allow area managers to take care of things, and there are now too many place updates needed to put in a forum request…

I also understand the issue with IGN and I would also be infuriated to see some bad edits as a result, so if it needs to stay at L4, fine.
