Auto segment locks

I was looking at my local town of Dundas, ON and noticed that most of the areas that I had previously created where now locked, and any changes would be pending moderation. I was ‘almost’ offended by this. I had made them all, and now apparently I wasn’t good enough to make changes to them

I noticed that nearly all of them were locked to level 3 (I’m level 2). And I also noticed that a user ‘iamthelexx (3)’ had updated them all. I did some reading about auto-locking, and is it possible/likely that this user had set it to auto-lock everything they touch, or is it a system wide policy?

I understand some things being auto-locked, but ID: 183501233.1835077862.1294990 for example, which is a local grass park - locking that to level 3 seems like auto-kill.

Cheers,
Mark

Hello Mark,

No need to be offended. Thanks for your hard work and we can look at the situation you have described.
The Auto lock mechanism is something introduced to protect the map from inexperience users. It is something set automatically by the system on all road based on set parameters. You can read furtehr about it here.

The manual lock is over ridding the auto lock system, and I can look if @iamthelexx was using it inappropriately if you send here some examples (permalinks).

Thanks,
HM.

Thanks for your response HM,

Here are a few that I find the most baffling:

I thought the concern was locking segments. My bad.

I would suggest you start by sending a question to @iamthelexx asking for the reason for him locking the Places to L3.
You can refer him to provide his answer here, so we all see what was his rational.

Cheers,
HM.

Thanks - have done so.

Mark

This is to protect the places from the yahoos at IGN. Most of them are Rank 2.

Be glad iamthelexx did it. I auto-lock all places to 4, as the worst IGN editors are Rank 3.

I will defend IamtheLexx(3)'s edits. They were done during the Greater Toronto MapRaid and they’re consistent with our place rules.

All waze places in Canada require a minimum lock of 3, once all the details are added.

Also if you find IGN editors that are making place mistakes, please use this form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1mVfJdCK9RHGFZJT_R7Z79h0bhqiu_HBPvNSE-SdHWkI/viewform

IamtheLexx(3) and the Hamilton MapRaid group did an absolutely mega job and have Place Validation at 99% (1245 places); you can see this in the Place Browser.

Whereas York Region is sitting at 13% (4334 places), Toronto at 25% (6498 places), Peel at 30% (4227 places).

I have been monitoring places since the last Canadian Mapraid, and L3 for places are necessary due to some inexperienced Wazers who either unwittingly change place details possibly due to the minor bug in the Waze app that doesn’t list the current place category, or on occasion I see people sometimes attempt to personalize a public place into a private one, like the person who tried to change a campground into his own personal lot space in that campground.

Before locking to L3, I do my best to make sure the pertinent information is present, and if you do make any pending changes to a place, when it is approved you will receive full credit for that change.

I appreciate all that was said, and wasn’t suggesting there wasn’t merit. I think, however, there’s an unintended side-effect, that says, “Thanks Mark for creating/updating these places in Dundas, but from now on - someone will have to approve what you’re doing”.

Cheers,
Mark

Well if we had better control over damaging changes, like a revert button to previous edit, then things might be easier to control. Keep editing places and roads and soon enough you’ll have that L3 rank.

Good hunting!
