L5 fix - M3/A34 junction Winchester

Could a L5 please have a look at this junction, where the slip road for the A34 leaves the M3 northbound.

It looks to me as thought the angle of the split should generate a keep right/left instruction according to which routing is being followed. However, the UR immediately north of the junction implies that it isn’t, and Live Map navigation confirms this.

Thanks

Hi,

Does the southbound junction work correctly? There appear to be two different types of implementation here for southbound and northbound junctions with the slips so I’d hesitate to fix one as maybe I’d apply the wrong fix!

Des. . .

Just double-checked and Live Map navigation gives a correct Keep Left for M3(N/S) J9 Exit to A34 etc in both directions, but neither routing gives a Keep Right to stay on the M3.

Southbound, that’s not an issue as the M3 stays 2 lanes throughout.

Northbound, Lane 1 leaves the M3 for the junction, leaving Lanes 2 & 3 to continue as the M3, so a Keep Right would be preferable for the northbound M3 and solves the UR.

I’ve updated the junction. Have to wait til tiles update to test.

That was one I did with the old method of forcing a left/right split that stopped working when the routing algorithm was tweaked. :frowning:

There’s probably a fair few of them still out there that need tweaking.

Yes, there are a few that need fixing, but the broken tiles and lack of updates is hampering it, for me at least (I know you’ve tested these, but I’ve yet to get a feel for how the routing works through the new method).

If there’s a ramp on a motorway split the to force a left right all three segments need to be freeway and have different names.

I’ve been doing this by adding a very short “wayfinder” segment with no name at the start of the ramp and setting one of the motorway segments to have two spaces. (i.e. “M1 (S)” and “M1 (S)”). The great thing about this is the routing engine sees it as different but WME and the client seem to display them as the same. (In WME if you edit the name you can see two spaces but when only displaying it only shows one).

I’m planning to do a UK version on the Junction Style guide setting out how we in the UK prefer to map major junctions (and tailored for driving on the correct side of the road) but time is precious at the moment.
