Reason for unlock: Speed limit is incorrect. It is actually 70 or 80 km/h in these sections.

Are these construction speed limits, or are they permanent?

We typically don’t adjust speed limits for construction areas, as they’re too variable.

Also – this would be better served as an update request. I’m not inclined to unlock a high-value freeway to R2 in most cases. If this is a permanent change to speed limits, please separate your request into permalinks that address which segments should be 70 and which should be 80.

Thanks!

Sadly, they are permanent. Yes, they are ridiculously low close to Sherwood Park, but I didn’t make the limits.

Here are the permalinks for the segments in question.

Most of the limits do not change at points where segments start and end. I have used the area tool to create a triangle pointing at the position of the road at which the limits change. Feel free to delete them when you are finished.

Thank you!

I’ve updated the segments according to your directions. Please review my changes. Thanks!

The segments look good now. I should be driving through this area in the near future as well to further verify it.

Also, what’s the deal with speed limits on ramps? I’ve noticed that practically all the ramps in and around Edmonton are posted at 50 km/h in the WME, but most ramps have only advisory limits. I tried to look it up but I saw two different things (it should be set to the highest limit on or off, and that it should have no limit set at all).

Hi Ethan,

The City of Edmonton had published a speed limit map around the time we were initially adding speed limits to Waze. That speed limit map (with a few exceptions) indicated that the ramps were indeed 50 km/h – which is likely enforceable under the “unless otherwise signed” part of the provincial speed limit regulations.

When a different limit (black text on white background) has been posted, we’ve put that one in place.

Also, with regards to the limit changes – they’re not always exact. Even when the boundary is placed correctly in Waze, it often takes 50-100m for the app to catch up and indicate the correct limit.

Hope that explains!

There are a few ramps that are wrong for sure as they have posted limits on white signs.

Most ramps only have advisory limits in my experience which are not actual posted limits (and these advisory limits are often not 50). This is where I got the info about limits on ramps: https://wazeopedia.waze.com/wiki/Canada/index.php?title=Main_Page&mobileaction=toggle_view_mobile#Speed_Limits

The page says that ramps with advisory limit signs should be posted at the highest limit of the in and out segment, which is often 80 or 100. Is this the correct place to be getting this info?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Ethan,

If you have an actual posted limit that is incorrect, I’d be happy to adjust it.

As I mentioned, the City of Edmonton has provided information in the past that has clearly denoted that the ramps with unsigned limits (or advisory black-on-yellow speeds) have a legal limit of 50 km/h. That information supersedes the Waze policy of how to mark the limit in other areas where there isn’t an over-ruling legal limit.

Thanks for the info.

As for the ramps that are posted incorrectly, I will simply post update requests as I encounter them.
