Am just looking at getting some ramps names according to how I read the wiki. Should this one be changed to “Entry to: Southern Cross Way / M1 / Gold Coast” The actual sign reads “Southern Cross Way To M1 Gold Coast”
Finally this one I have modified. The first segment I think is right as this is what the sign says as you come down the Inner City Bypass. What do people think about naming the second segment the same. There is no sign as you come down Hale St although there is one further up the ramp. I am just wondering if the verbal instructions will be appropriate. Previously both these ramp segments were named simply “To Milton Rd”
1: I would name it with the route number first and then the city names. Go by what’s on the big green signs -
“Entry to: M1 - Southern Cross Way / City / Gold Coast”
2: I haven’t included the blue sections on the signs as they generally represent services (WA, other states may vary). I have include an aircraft symbol on the ramps. The symbol shows but is ignored by TTS.
“Entry to: M1 - Southern Cross Way / Sunshine Coast / ”
3: This one has two signs :
the first is further back on the bridge over Hale Rd - “to Ipswich / Toowong via Milton Rd”
the next one near the intersection on the ramp - “to SR32 - Milton Rd / City / Ipswich / Toowong”
You would have to decide which one to use, probably the one on Hale St would be the preferred option. You can choose to name both segments or just name the first one as the name will be pulled from the next segment for the route instructions.
4: If you have “Exit to:” at the beginning of the ramp name, the instructions are “exit on to exit to road name”. You get a double exit to in the spoken instructions, if you are using a voice that includes spoken street names.
You can change to to just- “to Hale St / Paddington via Caxton St” and then the instruction would be “exit on to road name”
For the entry ramps you can just name the one connecting to the highway/freeway. The names of the segments before can be left blank as the name spoken will be the one from the next segment.
Thanks for the all the feedback. The only thing I don’t understand is when will you get the double “Exit to” call? In the wiki under Exit Ramps (bullet point 2) says to use “Exit to” in the ramp name?
You will get an “exit to” call when you are about leave a highway/freeway.
Here in WA, our freeway exits are signed “road name exit” ie: “SR13 - South St Exit”
So it went a bit like:
in 400m exit left
exit left onto “Exit to: SR13 - South St Exit”
So, in our case we got three exits in the prompt to leave the freeway because of the additional “exit”.
In your case it appears you don’t have an extra “exit” so you can use “exit to:” in the ramp names.
You will get - exit to “Exit to: road name” when you are about to leave a highway/freeway.
That’s similar to how I recalled the wiki saying how to name ramps.
Just had a look now and it seems that adding the city names got removed (accidentally?) during recent updates (9/8/13). And adding city names to off ramps never made it onto the wiki.
And, as Traveling_Gav said, “Exit to” is what’s in the wiki now, although it also used to say just “to” before 9/8/13.
So I assumed this meant all the suburb or city names as well?
I paid attention when driving today and I think having “Exit to” in the name is OK. For the ones I heard today it would say “Exit to the left. Exit to M5 Centenary Highway Jindalee” which I think sounds ok although I can also see that the second word exit is probably unnecessary. Do I take the wiki as the authority on this and preceed all ramp names with “Exit to”
I missed that bit about including everything on the last sign. None of the examples have the city name in them and I guess my eyes were starting to glaze over by that time of night

Personally, I like the way the wiki says to name them (now that I know city names haven’t been excluded ), but wasn’t 100% sure about the spoken directions.
The wiki is always the authority, even if people disagree with what’s there.
After having a close look at what happens when you are driving around my guess is that the wiki is written that way so that what appears on the screen provides positive direction by stating “Exit to”. It is not ideal from a verbal (TTS) point of view because there is some doubling up on the word exit but unless there is a way to make the TTS not read out some words then I guess the wiki is the best compromise.
