What is wrong? It looks good. The only issue I can see is if U-turns are allowing in any particular direction and currently no u-turn is allowed.
There was a system-generated report I saw earlier that I wanted to fix, then I decided to redo the intersection. I dislike bowties. They just don’t look…right. Is there an advantage for a bowtie vs other geometries?
Yes the bowtie actually resolves A LOT MORE problems then creates. When you have a square intersection you can not eliminate u-turns instruction unless you put in a lot more segments then the four that are there. So the bowtie really works… Now if you are getting a system generated right turn broken (to far away) then the center node may need to be moved (nudged) to see if that can eliminate the right turn PR. If you search for bowtie, then you can see a lot have been talked about the using the bowtie to resolve issues.
What if you put the center segments of the “H” intersection as two-way? That would not affect normal routing but it WOULD allow for U-turns without adding any additional segments.
For this intersection it would be a box and if they are two way segments for the box
That would cause strange instruction for the interchange. It can cause a left then a right then a left, when all you should hear is left at the intersection. If you try to eliminate the issue with turn restriction then other system error could appear like driving through a turn not allowed…
Even for a “H” intersection a bowtie is easier to eliminate u-turns.
When I have seen bowties it is usually because problems have been reported several times for that intersection.
I’ve actually found URs where people were complaining about the road “Not looking like that” when they pass through a bowtie. I guess they just have to get used to it. ![]()
Yes, it does look strange when you drive into the bowtie, with it twisting into the middle then back out. but that is the most simple and easy way to control turns.
