Re-locked

G’day PMG801 & GarvinGray.

This Temporary Alignment Rd (Permalink) runs parallel to SR26 - Sandgate Rd / Deagon, but here’s a concrete barrier between them. You can’t merge from one to the other. The GPS traces will overlap, but there’s no physical way between them at this point.

I’ve driven through this area a few times this week. Perhaps the roadwork crews open up access occasionally when they’re closing off another road section, but there’s definitely not a way through in peak hour.

There is a merge lane a bit further to the north (Permalink 2) where you can merge from Sandgate Rd to the Gateway Motorway, but you can’t go the other way from the Gateway Motorway to Sandgate Rd here.

Let me know if you’d like me to edit.

Cheers,
Jamie

Hey Jamie,

Thanks for the info.

I merged the two roads as they weren’t ‘fixing’ onto the correct road when driving through.

Do you have any ideas/thoughts on how to remediate?

If I put the temp alignment road back in it’s going to cause issues where you’re driving on the temp road but it’ll lock onto the exit and cause confusion.

Thanks for looking at this again PMG801.

Hmm yes. The GPS traces aren’t all that helpful, are they? If a GPS is as bad as some of these traces, it won’t matter how far apart we make the roads, they’ll still get it wrong. I can’t imagine the problems in this area would be worse than what’s happening here though? Maybe we could move the Temporary Access Rd a little further west?

The two roads are actually at very different heights where they’re currently joined on the map. I’m not sure an elevation change of one of them would help though?

If there’s two roads that come in close to each other and run parallel for a stretch like these but there’s no merge lane from one to the other, Waze shouldn’t assume we’ve changed roads (until it’s very obvious). If that isn’t what you’ve seen in the past it’s very disappointing.

I often navigate to a street just off Sandgate Rd. Now, from the time I turn onto the Gateway Motorway (where it starts near Bald Hills), Waze shows my next turn direction as a right onto my destination street. The assumption is that I can just continue straight ahead until I get to my destination - which isn’t correct, but the current map makes Waze think that you can.

In my opinion, if you can’t cross between the roads, they should be mapped as separate segments.

Perhaps after this we can start compiling a list of URs where the GPS ‘jumps’ them onto the wrong road and report these through to Waze?

It happened a few times when I had the roads split, that’s why I decided to merge the two roads into one however appears causing other issues now… I will split them again and place more distance between the two.

Sounds good. Make the roads fit the reality and we can deal with the problems it creates.

I’ll wait until you have made the edits to see how it all looks then.

I’m waiting for someone to action the unlock requests lol.

I’ve dropped the linked segments to L2 from the original post, if you need any more, let me know.

Dont forget that Waze wont snap from one road to another unless (a) GPS is lost and it reacquires closer to the other; or (b) you actually get a LONG way off the road that Waze thinks you are on. You can see this if Waze wants to take you along a service road and you decide not to Waze will still show you driving along the service rd as it heavily biases its position to where it tells you to go.

So having said that just create the map so that the correct instructions are given. You can tweak the actual layout later when you get better satpics or GPS traces. (I assume there is no tunnel here that is causing GPS issues?)

I recall reading somewhere that it’s 50 metres you need to be off track before Waze snaps off the road of it’s choosing.

No tunnels.
A couple of bridges, but nothing that would block GPS for more than a few seconds.

Can someone check the map edits i’ve made and let me know if it’ll fix our problems?

Seems good if there is just a temporary section of road while the work on the main…

G’day PMG801 & Travelling_Gav.

Sorry for the slow reply. This area looks great in the editor now. Thanks heaps.

PMG801 please mark this as solved if it is.
