Level4(Auto)→L3 Unlock: Greater London - Kentish Town (A400

To restrict a right turn

Please do NOT alter the restrictions at this junction - as I explained in the related UR comment (and in the [NOTE] UR which has been there for some time now), the restrictions set here currently have been confirmed by the local council, so any changes will mean Waze is out of sync with reality.

Could not see the Note UR also. I believe the UR asking for it do you have this note from the Council. I also say a No Right Turn sign is that a No Right Turn. It only takes the council to change its mind and they all get fined. [emoji2] [emoji2]

It’s there, try disabling any UR filtering scripts you’ve got running…

Yes, I have their FoI response in my emails at home - the information I posted in the [NOTE] UR is nothing more than a reformatted copy of the relevant part of that response.

I don’t disagree that the signage at this junction is utter crap and does cause genuine confusion. The question is whether or not we should corrupt the map data to prevent Waze from generating routes which are legal but which may cause confusion like this. Given that the primary intended use for Waze remains commuters, and given that commuters are more likely to have learned what the real restrictions are along the routes they take regularly, I think that restricting the turns here to match up with what the real world signage appears to be indicating will simply shift the problem from us currently dealing with URs from people unfamiliar with the junction, to us having to deal with URs from people complaining that Waze is sending them all around the houses rather than directing them to make a turn they know full well is permitted.

This is a discussion best held in the main UK forum, and until we come to a consensus on how to handle such junctions, I don’t think it’d be appropriate to mess with this one given that it currently will not offer up a genuinely illegal route for any combination of entry/exit point, and so no-one following a Waze route here is at risk of being penalised.

And no, the council can’t simply decide to change their mind here and start penalising people for making the left/right turns which are currently legal. To change the restrictions here would require the council to go through a formal legal process which isn’t a particularly rapid affair, and before they even get to the stage of drafting the legal paperwork to have any change authorised they’d almost certainly (for a major junction like this) also go through a public consultation period beforehand to establish the likely impact on making the proposed changes.

Oh, that junction!

Have a look on GSV at the road sign just past the bus stop (image from Jun 2015).

The half-right is clearly signposted as the route to follow for Holloway, confirming that turn is permitted. As the NOTE says, the NRT signs at the lights prohibit the turn into Brecknock Rd.

It’s just badly signed and I’ve made that turn myself a number of times, and seen lots of others do it, with no ill-effects.

Oooh, I’d never skipped that far back from the junction on street view to notice the sign… That at least makes the way the junction is signed slightly less crap than it seems just from looking at the signage at the lights, but I can still imagine people seeing the first sign, preparing to bear right at the lights, then having a wtf moment as they see the no right turn sign.

This same problem came up in August 2014 and again in October 2014.

Obviously this problem has fooled some pretty experienced editors before. In October 2014, the segments had a L5 lock - precisely to protect the junction as is, and I’m not sure why that was changed. I find myself wondering if it shouldn’t have a L6 lock on it. Any opinions?

I do apologize Twister-UK I was looking along the A400 for the Note and did not see it on Tufnell Park Road. It could not be a filter since I only filter UR’s under 7 days old.

As for Locking this to stop dumb Level 3 editors asking for Unlock again if the segment was locked to Level 6

Something is going on here since there is now 4 UR’s appeared over night. I will not be answering them since I am away soon. :?

Three of them appear to be general errors raised coming south down the A400, no instructions. The final one relates the Waze instructing a driver coming down Dartmouth Park Hill to turn left onto Tufnell Park Rd and seeing the NLT signs on the lights.

So only one related to the issue under discussion, and it’s from a different direction!

Following on from your earlier comment re the signage further back along Fortess Road, I’ve just done a similar virtual trek further back up DPH, and found a very clear bit of signage at the railway bridge which shows the “bear left” route is very much intended to be used. Not that this would help the user who raised this particular UR given they only joined DPH just before the lights, but something to remember for the next time a user raises a UR here when it’s obvious they have passed this sign

Anyway, it’s lunchtime, so I’m on the case with these URs…

I have marked the last message with Green Tick since I think this Subject is finished. Thanks to all for your the input.
