My Level: 3
Reason for request: Wonder if a senior editor could have a look at improving the lane guidance for M62 J10 exit to the M6? Please have a look at the comments on the UR.
I think there may need to be two exits off the M62, one for SB M6 on one for NB.
Agreed that this need changes. My dodgy internet connection has already consigned one set of changes to history. I’m leaving this post as a place marker to say I’m working on it.
I’ve compromised somewhat on the instructions, but I think this is the best we’ll be able to do.
Heading south on the M6, you will get “keep left onto M6(S) towards Birmingham” at the point where lane 1 becomes separated from lanes 2/3 by close-spaced dashed lines - the point at which you shouldn’t be changing lanes any more. If we get complaints that the next instruction (see below) is announced too soon, we may have to move that split up to the start of the solid white line.
Heading north on the M6, you will get no instruction at the split above. This is a compromise, as “keep right onto anything” is going to be confusing. After lane 1 drops, you will get “exit left onto M6 (N) towards Preston” where the exit ramp begins.
The two exit ramps converge into one - in reality and in Waze. Then, for either direction, you will get a KL/KR instruction further up the ramp.
I follow that the last instruction will be correct, either “keep left onto M6 > Birmingham” or “keep right onto M6 > Preston”.
And that the previous instruction will be either “exit left onto J10 to M6(S) > Birmingham” or “exit left onto J10 to M6(N) > Preston”.
But because the two routes rejoin and split again, I think it will be random which way Waze picks for the exit. So you might get “exit left onto J10 to M6(S) > Birmingham” followed by “keep right onto M6 > Preston”. Or for that matter “exit left onto J10 to M6(N) > Preston” followed by “keep left onto M6 > Birmingham”.
Absolutely right, Ian. I made a right pigs ear of that. So now I’ll compound my mistake by fixing it at 2am.
I’ve now split the entire ramp into 2 separate segments. Since, in reality, the 2 lanes rejoin partway up the ramp before splitting again, it’s possible to change lanes and I think a KL/KR instruction is still needed at the next split. So what I’ve done is make a horrible little X of crossover segments at the split. The crossing segments have 24/7 all-vehicle restrictions to prevent Waze routing anyone to the wrong side, but their presence forces the KL/KR instructions we want.
Feel free to point out some other daft mistake I’ve now made. I hope there isn’t one, but I wouldn’t be surprised.
That’s intentional. It’s a single lane drop which, I feel, needs a keep left - as opposed to the next exit which is leaving lane 2 across a dashed line, so needs exit.
If there was any way to give a pure “keep right” (i.e. without any road name), I’d be happy to have that as well at the first split.
