My Level: 4
Reason for request: Just looking at a UR on the Permalink, who’s complaining that the instructions for the exit off M60 J18 EB is too late. I know usually the split should be at the 0-mile marker, but the line lane markings seem to change at the 1/3 mile marker for the exit. Would it be better the split being moved back to his point?
Waze will be telling them to exit before this point so the fact its at the junction means its not to late if you ask me. Is he complaining about that or the next instruction? If you do move it back you will then get a keep right while you still on the M60CW thus they could miss the exit they actually wanted. I still a newbie but if they are complaining about the exit from the M60 I leave it.
These URs are still outstanding. Can a senior editor advise please?
I’ve had a look at this one now. The problem is simple: the signs have been put up by a nutter and are highly misleading!
This GSV image shows the last gantry before the physical split, where the lane markings change. It has a “1/3m” marker. Any sane driver would assume that means 1/3m until the ramp to the junction splits off from the M62.
Except it isn’t! That gantry is 1/3m from the split halfway up the ramp - so it’s 1/3m from the choice of taking the M66 or the M60. The gantry further back, which says 2/3m, is also referring to the split on the ramp. So I have to agree with the reporter - the first split from the M62 is too late.
I also see the signpost nutter has been at work on the slip road itself, where the signage to show which direction to take seems inadequate to me.
This is a reasonable consideration. However, given the roads can be very simply identified: M60/M62/M66, I think there’s a good chance users will be able to follow the directions.
So what I’ve done is:
- Moved the first split back to the 1/3m gantry and tweaked it to be a proper KL/KR (since it’s a 2/3 lane split)
- Moved the split on the ramp back to the point where it actually starts. Although it’s technically an exit/straight on, I’ve left it as a KL/KR
- Changed the ramp names to give (I think) better instructions
If we do get complaints of drivers doing a KR for the M60(CW) too early back onto the M62, we can put in a “continue” instruction at the physical split from the M62, where the first junction was before.
And a special “F you” award goes to the red Simpsons lorry blocking most of the useful GSV here.
Thanks for that Iain, looks good.
I’ll let the report know about the changes.
