I’m a relative newbie, but have already run across one item where the map doesn’t fit reality when it comes to routing. And I don’t see it on the forums, so…
Local Traffic Only sections of roads. Usually created in construction zones where the construction is taking place on side-streets and the homeowners still need access to their homes.
So, if your destination is within the local traffic only area, you should be routed on that road. If it isn’t, you should be routed around that area. I was recently routed down one of the local traffic only segments, but to follow the detour, so I could proceed legally, added about another mile or so to my trip. If Waze knew about that segment, it would have routed me differently, making a shorter trip overall. (Much shorter than the detour).
In the past, as signs are posted “Road Closed, Local Traffic Only”, I’ve reported them as a road closure when driving by, including stopping to take pictures. I’m guessing that wiser heads than mine disagree, as the markings went away remarkably quickly.
Right now it looks like the current construction zones will be going away remarkably soon, so there is no need for anything in the immediate future, but for next year when construction season starts again, it would be a handy tool to have at out disposial.
A possible solution would be to temporarily mark those roads in the editor as private road (and give some indication in the road name that this temporary change has been made). Then Waze won’t route down them unless the destination is within the area. If this is done, the previous road type (if not just street) should also be indicated in the road name so that when the construction is over the road type can be properly reverted.
We like to keep a list on the state page for construction here. That way another local editor can see why the road was set a certain way. Also serves as a reminder to go back and look to see if it is time to change back. I’m setting construction zones all over the state, so it helps me remember to go back and correct these.
Now if all editors knew this was here, it would be nice. But wishful thinking. A new editor will see a system error and fix it thinking that they are helping.
Yep, then they pave a new road over the old one, find one segment I didn’t lock and make a new connection. Then can’t fix turn restrictions, so they leave it.
In many cases, these types of closures are due to the road being entirely closed at some point further down the road. Traffic getting to destinations prior to that closure can do so, but there isn’t any way to drive all of the way through. In those cases, if it’s closed for more than a day or two, you can disconnect the road at the point where it’s closed. This will prevent routing down it except if your destination is prior to where it’s closed. If it still allows traffic to drive all of the way through, but only local traffic is allowed, then setting it as a temporary private road as mentioned is a good option.
