"Local Traffic Only" for long-term road work

In Wilmington, DE, several segments are marked “local traffic only” In real Life, though they are not closed.

Would it make sense to temporarily turn these into private roads to increase the penalty and discourage waze from routing over these ramps?

Thanks for your advice.

Does the road work have an end date/time?

Marking a closure won’t prevent local routing on there – but it will mark the closure on the map and also prevent thru-routing.

One section of I 495 N near Wilmington is closed indefinitely because it has shifted, and they are still studying how to repair it.

?The nearest on-ramps are closed.

Some slightly further-away ramps have signs up saying “through traffic prohibited”. Anyone who got on there would only be able to ride for one exit.

I am not sure what “through traffic prohibited” means, since there are no destinations actually on an interstate highway.

But the reports keep coming in around Wilmington, and it is difficult, even after asking the wazers, to find out exactly what bothers them about the waze map associated with the I-495 closings.

I’d take a look at this thread, and submit a closure via that method: https://www.waze.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=129&t=102605

It will get nice construction icons on the map and wazers will be able to clearly see it’s closed.

Thanks for the advice. The section of the road is not actually closed. It is marked “Through Traffic Prohibited”

I thought we were talking about an Interstate now, that has nothing but through traffic! :frowning:

In that case, talk to your RC – it may make sense for it to be marked as a closure anyways…

I believe with I-495, the specific closure is the bridge over the Christina River, in which case we would report, to Waze as just those segments over the bridge being closed, while all the other segments of I-495 would remain open. That will naturally cause Waze to not use that road for through traffic, but still consider it if a route was to involve exiting prior to the actual closure.

You should double-check with one of your Delaware SMs or OrbitC and make sure the correct segments are reported to Waze as closed, while all other, whether posted as local traffic only or otherwise, remain open in Waze. Also, is there a schedule for restoring the bridge or is it just closed indefinitely until it can be restored?

They do not have a definite schedule as they are still evaluating the damage and coming up with a plan.

Area managers have been relying on those of us who drive somewhere in the vicinity to help keep them updated; one other wilmington-area driver and I (I avoid those ramps because of the terrible traffic now, but I am good at reading the DelDot website) are doing our best to filter through URs to fill in the blanks.

“Through Traffic prohibited” is a new one on me – there is apparently nothing to keep people from using the remaining open segments to get around the city.
