Lvl 5 - M9 Spur (S) exits - flurry of URs

Hi all,

There has been a raft of URs raised over the last week at this junction where the M9 Spur (S) splits and joins the M9 (W) and M9 (E) (onto M8 (W)).

TBH, I have been meaning to raise this thread for a while, after the last piece of work was done on this junction.

The issue is this:

As you approach the end of the M9 Spur (S), you need to either:

  • Keep Left to exit onto Entry to M9 (E) J1a (heading S on M9 (E) towards the M8)
  • Keep Right to exit onto Entry to M9 (W) J1a (heading W on M9 (W))

Unfortunately, the current layout is issuing a Continue rather than a Keep Left, and a Turn Right rather than a Keep Right.

Keep Left directions: https://www.waze.com/livemap?lon=-3.40959&lat=55.95037&from_lon=-3.38527&from_lat=55.97167&to_lon=-3.41018&to_lat=55.94913&zoom=17
Keep Right directions: https://www.waze.com/livemap?lon=-3.40134&lat=55.96116&from_lon=-3.38527&from_lat=55.97167&to_lon=-3.42971&to_lat=55.95698&zoom=15

Now, as far I can see, the current layout looks like it should be issuing the Keep Left/Right instructions - the M9 Spur (S) ends and 2 ramps split off, different segement names, angles look very similar, etc, etc.

To compound matters - due to the Continue being issued when exiting S, and the fact that the ramp is unnamed, this means that the next direction/instruction is the Keep Right onto the M9 (E) (heading S towards M8) when joining the M9 proper. This proves highly confusing to drivers unfamiliar with the area, especially due to the fact the the signs in the gantries above the exits on the M9 Spur (S) list the M8 as the left exit and the M9 as the right. All this combined it would be possible for a confused driver, taking the right exit and end up heading the completely wrong way.

There could also potentially be a case for splitting the M9 Spur (S) as the left lane becomes a turn off lane quite a ways back from the actual junction, so that drivers are given the Keep Left/Right instructions much earlier.

Thoughts?

I took a few photos of this section of road on my way to work the other day, for reference.

  1. First gantry signs (with 1st speed camera)

  2. Second gantry signs (with 2nd speed camera)

NOTE: If you look closely, you can see the lane markings change just after the gantry and the left lane becomes the exit lane for the M8, etc

  3. Last gantry on the Spur

  4. Gantry on the M9 (E), heading toward Newbridge r/about

So does anyone with knowledge of the area have anything to add?
