What lane guidance is there, and can it be improved?
Five lanes feed two adjacent exits: the leftmost two lanes take the first exit (Cathedral), leaving three lanes. The third lane (as was) slips to the second exit (Springburn); all three lanes carry on.
I see that waze gave a “keep left”, meaning for the wazer to stay left in the three lane situation in order to take the Springburn exit. However they kept left into the first (Cathedral) exit.
I wonder whether, now that we have lane guidance, we need to rethink our guidelines about where to start separate slip roads on WME.
At present the first slip, correctly under present guidance, separates where road paint between the lanes to indicate the start of the dedicated exit lanes. There’s then a long stretch where Waze has the main road (3 lanes) and the slip (2 lanes) mapped as separate parallel roads. This prevents us from giving lane guidance showing five lanes (unless we do a hack).
Furthermore, because the two slip roads leave at separate mapped junctions, I don’t think there’s any way of telling people who want the second slip which of the right-hand lanes they need to be in, until after the first slip has gone off.
So I’m wondering whether we should remap so that both slips leave at the same point? This point would be about where the first slip physically separates. Then it would be easy to have lane guidance for five lanes: two taking the first slip, middle either taking the second slip or going straight, and lanes four and five going straight.
I’m sure the real experts will pile in with their own views…
I think the UR is probably more related to the user not following Waze instructions and the GPS not adjusting to the users actual position after they ignored Waze.
As for adding LG, I think the junction to A803 (Cathedral) should be moved further down towards the exit, with LG added for both the exit and straight on (with View and Hear…View only would cause a conflict between the straight on arrow on the screen and Kate telling you to exit left for A803 (Springburn) if that was your route). Exit to A803 (Springburn) doesn’t warrant LG as its just a normal exit, not a lane drop.
This is something we’ve done successfully in other places, such as M62 / M1, M3 / M25 and most recently at M25 / M11 (both sides). You do need to override the turn instruction for the middle ramp though, as the default is wrong (despite what JAI claims).
Saying that, I also feel that the current mapping (with separate ramps) is equally correct, and works fine for anyone who’s paying attention to the road (but I’ve never driven in Glasgow, so…). I also struggled to get Waze to give me any route that used the Springburn exit, as it always preferred to use the Cathedral one.
