Does anyone have any clue whats going on HERE? It looks to me like “Heyns” is trying to make the Western side of Glenwood Rd a gated community. Thoughts?

Was surprised to get a response:

it is an attempt to indicate security gates (permanently closed) - the area is a secured area, with a single “boom gate” entrance.

Many areas in Pretoria are “secured” in this fashion (but Johannesburg even more so!!) - Waze does not know about this (yet). So it tries to direct one along these routes, just to let you end up against (well, braking just short of ;-} ) a security gate. And then YOU must figure the way out of the maze…

Some of these security gates are PERMANENTLY closed, while others allow access to residents using a remote control - it is not yet clear how to indicate this situation in Waze. Making all the “enclosed” roads “PRIVATE” is one way (but has some drawbacks as well), but marking just the gate locations as “PRIVATE” with the direction “UNKNOWN” seems to be working also.

Hi Heyns,

I stay in a boomed area in Lynnwood Manor and one of the changes you made did not work for me. After your changes Waze would not let me dive to my house on my normal route, it wanted to re-route me through a gate witch was permanently closed and it would not let me drive through the main gate because you “blocked” it. I fixed the gate you “blocked” by making it a private road. I understand what you want to do, but you need to be very careful on which gates you do it and how. Keep in mind that some Waze users have remotes to enter through some of those gates. My recommendation is to delete a small piece of the road in the case of permanently closed gates, so that the two roads are not connected. This is just for gates which are really permanently closed where it is impossible for anyone to enter, i.e. there is really no longer a road there. For boom gates and gates where the residents may have remotes to enter, I suggest to just make the roads private and connected so that the residents who uses those gates do not get errors when using Waze going through those gates. Any thoughts on that?

Hi Kyle,

It is a reply to Heyns, I tried to search for him under members, but I cannot find him, not sure how to get the message to him and was hoping he sees it here in the discussion.

I would also like to hear general comments from other editors on suggestions for how to handle boom gates/road closures, etc. Is there a “standard” way to edit road closures and boom gates in gated communities?
