Major LHD country issue esp about Clockwise & Anti-CW

:?:
Whilst reporting an issue on the M60 the other day I noticed a fundamental problem that must exist for countries that drive on the left.

I reported a problem I saw on the opposite carriageway.

Because the M60 is a ring-road essential around manchester (or essentially a circular route) it uses clockwise and anticlockwise, rather than a direction heading (N,E,S,W).

I assume that because waze was created with ‘drive on the right’ rules of the road in mind, it thinks that if Im on the left I must be travelling anti-clockwise. So the problem which I used the ‘other lane’ option to report was wrongly listed as clockwise. In fact that would make the issue seem like it was on my side of the road and in my direction.

So it seems that clockwise and anticlockwise are reversed in countries that drive on the left. (or it could be an issue particular to this road only?)

BUT, I also noticed that it assumes im on the right side of the road on some dual carriageways. Therefore it doesnt let me take exits to the left but guides me past them and onto a roadabout, then takes me right around the roundabout, which then puts me on the opposite side of the road (effectively a u-turn) and lets me take the left hand exit there - of course the exit is now on the opposite side of the carriage way - so once again it seems to have applied ‘right side rules of the road’ to me.

How can this be fixed?

Is it mapping issue?
an issue with something in settings?
or a more fundamental issue to do with the set up of left hand drive / right hand drive rules understood by waze.

Its confusing as on other ‘straight’ motorways it rightly expects me to be on the left in the UK and guides me appropriately.

Please help.

PS I adore the waze app on my iphone. Its been superb. This is the only issue Ive encountered.

It could well be a mapping issue. Waze should cope perfectly well with LHD systems. There does seem to be a slight issue with reporting issues on the other lane but that happens in RHD countires too. Can you pinpoint any areas on http://world.waze.com/cartouche where you appeared to be driving on the wrong side? If so, once you find the area, hit the “Permalink” button, copy the URL and paste it here. One of us can take a look for you!

Surely the clockwise and anticlockwise are labels given to the roads by the map editor. And if this is dual carriageway then you can’t use other lane to mean the other carriageway in any case.

Support have confirmed that it should be able to work even with dual carriageways. I think it works via azimuth and a radius of the report. Though I’ve seen many reports saying it doesn’t work! Should probably get some clarification. Will email support if I remember later.

I’d be very surprised if that worked when there are a bunch of lanes close together. It would be great if editors could “pair” roads in some way.

Support saying it should work and it actually working are very different things. As far as I’m concerned “other lane” reporting on dual carriageway and motorway hasn’t worked for at least the last 6 or 7 months. I always just make sure to stipulate in comments which carriageway it is, or alternatively I leave it the hell alone and let someone on that side report it.

This is a mapping issue most likely. There are some areas in the UK that have been edited by non-UK users and also waze’s team of ign editors. I know the A55 around Bangor in North Wales had the carriageways reversed the last time I went down there. If/when you encounter the problem, try to drop an Update Request for the local Area Manager to see. Alternatively do as Darren has suggested, and get a permalink from http://world.waze.com/cartouche and someone here will take a look for you.

Hi,

This may sound “ungrateful” but why/how can foreign users be editing maps in the UK, unless they’ve been here?
And more to the point, if they don’t know we drive on the correct side of the road ( ) what is the point of doing such edits, bar creating more points opportunities for us?

Des. . .

Going back to M60 - I have looked at sample sections of the road in detail and the whole road zoomed out and I cannot see any mislabelled sections or ones with the wrong direction. I’m only using a 10in screen so may have missed small sections. But nothing major.

This is what I think happened. The OP was going anti-clockwise (or c/w) and posted a problem for the other “lane”. Waze didn’t manage to assign it to the opposite c/w (or a-c/w) direction and assigns it instead to the OP’s current direction/carriageway. OP thinks this is a LHD problem but it’s just the normal one we often see in dual carriageways.

Waze is definitely not assigning the OP’s position based on LHD or RHD but purely normal gps positioning and snapping to nearest road (plus fine-tuning for assuming keeping to navigation instructions). And a-c/w and c/w are definitely the same on both sides of the Atlantic.

As for the other problem, that surely has to be a map editing problem.
