Map editors with access to military bases

I don’t even know if there are area managers for military bases who have regular base access. But my humble observation is: Would be great to have more of them.

I see now that the process of being approved to be an area manager is under review:

Supposedly there are threads discussing this, but I haven’t read up on it yet.

The bottom line is: The only real way to edit the map on base properly – mainly the turn restrictions – is to be there. And it’s hard for most civvies to casually amble on base. So more military map editors – area manager or not – would be a good thing.

There was someone who lived at Ahuimanu military reservation and he redid the new construction there and at hickam. I go to Schofield a lot to do IT contract jobs so I’ve been working on it a lot.

You mean Aliamanu? And it’s great that you do Schofield when you can.

I know we’re not supposed to use Google Maps for mapping, but I do use “Street View” to check turn restrictions. Can’t do that on base, because the Street View crews weren’t allowed on bases, it seems.

Yeah aliamanu in salt lake. Also, according to the mega wazers on the forum certain restrictions should be kept even though it’s legal such as time based contraflow turn restrictions. It’s better not to allow it when it’s only sometimes available.

Google Maps was allowed on military bases, but they were not allowed to take photos of the roads and buildings on the base. Within the first 3 days of arriving in San Antonio images of buildings and roads on Ft Sam Houston, appeared on Google Streets and they were immediately banned from going onto military bases after that incident.

Anyone going to MCBH KBay anytime soon? I just remapped the renovated residential area on the north east of the penninsula…many roads with no names. Let me know.

I live in Kaneohe, but need some kind of sponsor to get on base, I assume.

ACTUALLY…

To get on a military base, all you really need is proof of insurance and a valid driver’s license. I usually get a bag of food and tell the guard I’m going to give my girlfriend lunch. Or something like that. It usually works (at least on the bases around here).

OK! Maybe I’ll try that Saturday, then. I’ll have my car back by then. Lemme look on the map and I’ll navigate my way there. Usually I use the “map issue” report in the app to mark the road name, then find the update request notation to add in the names.

I do the same thing when going to new roads or subdivisions.

Depends on threatcon. Might be higher cuz of 9/11. Every time I went on mcbh I needed the person to come to the gate to sign me in.

True. Two US Embassies are under siege right now, so it may go up, at least at the bases around the world. I’d wait a couple of weeks. You can always drive up to the gate and look for the THREATCON sign. If it’s Alpha, you should have no problems getting in.

Also, 2 of the bases here in San Antonio are training bases, with one being a boot camp, and the other having a huge hospital that citizens sometimes get transported to, so they’re pretty lax on who gets on the base and who doesn’t

Hey everyone! I’m new to editing in Waze and was a longtime map editor for Trapster. No longer use Trapster for obvious reasons (Waze is WAY better). I live on Schofield Barracks and fly to the Big Island and Kuai on occasion for my job as H-60 and H-47 crewmember trainer for the aviation brigade on wheeler. I’ll do my best to help maintain the Military installations on the islands for the team. I refer fellow soldiers to Waze all the time, so i’d like to make sure the bases are mapped and labeled correctly within Operational Security restrictions. So wave at the noisy Blackhawk helicopter flying over it may be me. Aloha and Howdy Yall!

In 2006, 2007 and 2008, that wouldn’t work. I was going to the dive shop on Hickam (now Pearl Harbor) and they had to come to the gate to sign me in.

Also, for HI drivers: you must have current registration, safety and insurance.

Hey, just passing on: You probably don’t have much time to get to Fort Shafter, but if you know a Wazer who does, I noted this Update Request indicating there is out-of-date road alignment around Parks Road:

https://www.waze.com/editor/?env=usa&lon=-157.87897&lat=21.35380&layers=2981&zoom=5&segments=57538039

Would kill for an up-to-date street map, including housing areas, for any military installation.

No problem, Ill get down there and see what I can do. Im in the big island right now but get back to Oahu tonight. I also had some quirk with directions in hilo Monday that im going to look at when I get back home.

Thanks for the fix in that area! Also for Kalakaua Homes, Schofield. Maybe the word “street” should be added to the labeling of the new segments – some seem to lack them?
