Hi Editors,
I’d appreciate your help with a map update.

Reason:
This is a school zone and the school-zone-speed-limits limits are not applied to the segments where it should be.
the speed limit signs can be seen here:
westbound Snyders Lake Rd: https://goo.gl/maps/VdKnBPaaJ96rwgaN7
eastbound Snyders Lake Rd: https://goo.gl/maps/vNj6DxMi4qfmDibx7
Additionally, the other road segments around this school are also have incorrect speed limits:
the speed limit signs can be seen here:
northbound on Lape Rd: https://goo.gl/maps/93yvJgzg7uBBdtZ88
southbound on Reynolds Rd: https://goo.gl/maps/Age4Bfodwah6vfRq9
Thank you in advance,

Hi Than - At the moment, Waze does not support time-based speed limits like school zones, so we list the speed limit of the road for what it is the majority of the day.
This is a highly requested feature. I’d recommend upvoting it here on the Waze Uservoice, as the Waze staff use this to judge popular feature requests for potential app development: https://waze.uservoice.com/forums/59223-waze-suggestion-box/suggestions/3109703-it-would-be-great-if-school-zones-were-added
The school zone speed limits around this school are not time restricted: the signs are posted for 24 hour applicability. Please teach me if there is some traffic law I am unaware of that says they should only apply during school hours even if the signs do not say so. I am aware of locations where the signs are posted with hours or “when blinking” with lights. That is not the case here.
Per NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law - Artlce 30 Section 1180, school zone speed limits can only be set to a maximum range of 7am to 6pm, or any combination of times within those limits. That time limit can be extended only with flashing beacons, which can only be turned on up to a half hour before and after student activities. So when there are no specific times listed or flashing beacons to override, it goes to the state law 7am-6pm default.
Thanks for teaching me the reasoning it’s considered time restricted.
Where is the policy posted that the lower of the school hours or non-school hours should be applied as the default speed limit? I would think that the safer thing to do is apply the lower speed limit, as it applies to the more heavily trafficked time of day, and safety is more important that false speeding warnings from the app at night.
Again, Thanks for teaching!

While the most trafficked, it is technically <12 hours of the day and also doesn’t apply for several months of the year. We have tried them in some places in the past, and other Wazers dropped error reports and complaints about being told to slow down outside of schools hours / the school year.
It does come down to drivers paying attention to signage, and the fact that we show schools are area polygons and labels on the map is hopefully a helpful visual as well. If we do ever get the ability to add time-based speed limits, it will definitely be our top priority to add school zones in.
Glad to clear up the issue and always happy to have a discussion on mapping. While you can’t edit yet, feel free to join our Northeast Region Discord server, and once you can edit, we’d be happy to show you the ropes. The editor is a bit more complicated than the GMaps tools and our standards are a bit stricter, so it’s a bit easier to have a live conversation. Always happy to have more help in the area!
