Hi all, can I check the convention for naming (or not) private roads / service roads / car park roads - e.g. “$city golf course”, “$supermarket parking”. The Wiki says not to name parking lot roads and petrol station roads but I couldn’t see anything specific about other types of landmarks or private/service roads in general. I guess the “Street” should only ever be a road name - if it’s an entrance to a golf course / supermarket etc then it should be unnamed and the Golf course / supermarket etc named using a landmark in the same way as for car parks and petrol stations? Thanks.
Generally we don’t name access roads to match their destination, especially if there’s already a named landmark present. It’s not necessary for the purposes of routing, as address information comes from other sources.
And as for navigation instructions, drivers will hopefully remember where they were driving to, and will see suitable road signs when approaching their destination.
Thanks for the clarification.
Hi everyone
How does Waze handle private roads? Does it consider the time traveled from one point to another as with streets, or does it disregard times traveled on private roads? Is a private road almost like a parking lot road? Is it possible to have a traffic jam alert on a private road?
I work for a very big company? I understand that naming private roads should be avoided. Yet, naming the private roads at my company will be really helpful. I named my roads after the main divisions on them. It just look really great on the map
plus, if Waze can speak the names of private roads, then it will make things for visitors really easy. Since our direction signs are loaded with many names and arrows! It’s hopelessly cluttered. So my attempt is to simplify it with Waze ![]()
May I keep my private road names :-D, or should I remove them? ![]()
I believe that Waze will record traffic for a private road, it will not for a parking lot.
As for naming of the roads, I think it’s best to keep to the ‘official’ names. You may find another editor will ‘correct’ any other names.
Routing: Waze treats PLR and private more or less identically for routing (if there’s any difference I don’t know what it is!). Waze will route to a destination on either but won’t route through them if another route is available.
Traffic: The main difference between the two is traffic detection/warnings. Waze can (AFAIK) detect and warn of a traffic jam on private roads just like “normal” streets. PLR will suppress traffic warnings. Whether or not traffic speeds are recorded for either type is irrelevant - as Waze won’t even consider them for routing unless no other route is possible.
Naming: Both PLRs and private can be legitimately named depending on the circumstances. Many private roads have perfectly correct names and should be named. Just because the Cator Estate in Blackheath is private access only (with gates on most of the entrances) doesn’t mean the roads do not have legitimate names. If private roads within your company compound have recognised names, there is no reason not to name them. I doubt anyone else will be offended!
PLRs should not be named if they are parking lots. There are other reasons to use PLR for normal streets and these can be named. For example, you may have a main road with a parallel “frontage” road to reach properties that cannot be accessed from the main road - example here. If these are normal streets, Waze will sometimes direct people to drive along them instead of the main road. Even if the driver ignores this, Waze snaps them to the frontage road, picking up the “main road speed”. As the frontage road gets “faster” this happens more often. The solution is to make it private or PLR - and I personally prefer PLR as people are only likely to use that road to stop at a house.

Only the main road from the main entrance running through the premises has an official and registered metropolitan street name. All roads connected to it, are without name. In stead of having a spiderweb of roads, I thought of naming them appropriately, where places vehicles are allowed to stop, I do make them PLRs, to keep the vehicle off the road, thus maintaining proper road statistics ![]()
I enjoy mapping my work. For the first time I can drive everywhere on roads. With the other navigators I’m driving more in the bushes than on the road. Maybe I can trade the 4x4’s in for sedans now ![]()
Oh yeah, my company has one entrance, so Waze won’t guide public through my private roads, as for being a huge detour in any case. You have to navigate to a location on my roads, deliberately, therefore, I honestly feel naming my private roads , even the PLR, won’t affect the ideal of Waze that much, if any … hehehe… If we were a shopping mall, then I fully understand and agree that naming PR & PLR would be causing problems.
I can remove the names if you insist.
