Parking Lot Road vs Private - need clarification

Can someone please clarify for me when it’s best practice to use “Parking Lot Road” and when it’s best to use “Private Road?” and maybe a couple of scenarios? I’ve read the forums and the wikis and there’s no clear description for best practice.

This road was a PLR and someone changed it to private and said that this was a private not a PLR without an explanation. It’s my understanding that neither type will affect Waze reporting???

Thanks in advance.

I would have used Parking lot there too. Private Road and Parking lot road both act the same in routing, Waze won’t use it unless the destination is on it. What I’m not sure about is if they both appear in the client the same way or shade.

I generally use Private road when there is a subdivision street that Waze likes to use to get around busy intersections. Waze wants to find the quickest route and sends people thru a subdivision to cut a corner. When some one complains about it or says there is a sign " No Thru Traffic", I will change a segment of a street to private road. It acts like a parking lot road in routing and will not use it as a cut thru, but still allows people going home in the subdivision to get there. Another use of Private Road is in a gated community. Here is a Wiki entry on Private Installations: http://www.waze.com/wiki/index.php?title=Private_Installations

I agree with bigbear. The road mentioned, IMO, is a parking lot road. So would the private road segments to the west. Alleys - if left mapped - should also be PLot but that’s mentioned in the wiki.

For the referenced segment, from a navigation point, it presently dead-ends so it doesn’t matter whether it’s set to PLot or Private. Waze should only route on that segment if it’s part of the destination.

In addition to bigbear’s notes about Private road use, I use it for any rural long driveways that stay on the map. Parking Lot could just as easily be used but that’s the convention I’ve been using.

The biggest difference I think between PLot and Private roads is that I believe PLot roads hide traffic jam reports.

Ahh, glad to see someone else had a question about PLR v. PR too. I had been using PR just for gated communities, private driveways that stay on the map, and some access roads to city/county/state/fed properties not meant to be open to the public. Then PLR for most everything else (apartment complexes, mapped parking lots, cemeteries, alleys, etc.).
