For the first 10 place edits a new editor can’t do any damage because their work just becomes a PUR. I agree. Let’s have UR’s not be closable by new editors until they’ve had 10 or so approved by a higher level editor.
There seems to be a debate between Waze and the editing Community. They seem to think that all new editors will be measured until they get the knowledge they need. So it’s been working, IMHO because we are here to clean up the mess.
I do agree that something needs to be done. With the new auto promotions, they could be L3 before you know it. And still with no forum account. I am dealing with that now.
I still suggest that the Auto L2 only happens upon some kinda connection with the community.
The only restriction is regestration to the forum and some kind of list you get entered on so your state management team is aware of your presence.
This will go on until something bad happens and then it will be to late to stop.
It is my understanding that once they log into WME, a forum account is activated for them but you can always as your RC to get with staff and force activate the forum account if needed. You can also let your RC know about the defiant PMs and they would have the option to “block” the user from editing. This is all actions that can currently be done.
All that being said,
Currently the only way we can find these is if we happen across them while working URs or if they happen to close out one of your own URs that your dropped (this is how I have found it most of the time)
I 100% agree, there should be a better solution. I like Sean’s idea of allowing a new editor to only add comments to a UR until a certain amount has been moderated (10 seems reasonable to me at this time) and approved by a Rank 3 or higher. This will allow us to ensure they are communicating with the community and that they are not being rude in there comments. (They are representing Waze after all)
My opinion has been that an editor be rank locked at Rank 1 until they join a community network to learn proper editing. Once joined, the RC would release the Rank lock. The automatic promotion to Rank 2 would still be 3000 edits as it currently is.
I agree that new editors should not be able to close URs without approval by a higher level editor. I also think the process for becoming an editor should be modified. I know when I became an editor, there was too much to read so I just dove in. I figured that’s what everyone did. Who actually reads operating manuals before using something? I also figured that there was no official leadership. People moved up by editing but no one was really in charge. I think that is what most new editors believe. I think it would be helpful if the information provided to new editors (when they initially sign up) was limited to a short explanation of how the community works. They should be required to list a region upon signup and that could auto generate a very short message/email explaining they will be able to edit once they contact the RC in GHO, Slack, Discord, etc. Once they are in the appropriate group, the RC can allow them to start editing.
I think the idea of forcing a forum login before editing is a fantastic idea!
Dropping URs via Live Map and MCs in the editor to get a new editors attention is frustrating to say the least … especially when red roads and unconnected nodes continue to pop up around them.
BTW - a user that’s resistant to engagement and coaching is concerning. “Defiant PMs” telling you to “Butt out” is scary! Is there a “magic undo” button that someone (Champs?) has access to in order to roll back everything a destructive user has done if they went on some sort of rampage?
Nope, there is no such tool. This has happened before and it’s taken the concerted efforts of the local editors to clean up as much as they can before the breakages are captured in a tile update, unfortunately. This is why we have locking standards, to mitigate the amount of damage a newer editor can cause, either intentionally or inadvertently.
Yep, we had someone wipe out a huge chunk of San Antonio (I believe) one time and it took some work by the editors to fix it.
The only “magic button” a champ would have is to ban a person that is that defiant from future edits.
I know I mentioned it below but I want to restate that a requirement for new editors to login to the appropriate discussion group (Discord, Slack, GHO, etc) before being able to edit would solve a huge number of problems. There would still be problems, but at least new editors would immediately understand that there is actual oversight and people there to help them. It seems to me that the quality editors we currently have where I edit (Texas), are those that signed up for Slack and embraced the community. The others that did not embrace the community (and often realized that editing was not meant as a place to score a bunch of easy points) may have left but probably were not going to be a benefit to what most of us are trying to accomplish (a great map).
Back to remembering there is more than just TX or the US when it comes to editors; some countries have no community or have no discussion group other than the forum that may or may not be monitored in their area. It’s tough for Waze to truly ‘sanction’ how and when editors can edit. The RCs have several tools available to them to help find/spot new editors before they dive in too far.
There are also messages placed in the Feed for new editors to recommend they find their local forum and introduce themselves, read the wiki, etc. More steps are being taken but it’ll take time for them to come to fruition.
Also remember that you can use the “Snapshot Mode” to see what an area looked like as long as a tile update hasn’t taken place. (The one time the usual delays are beneficial…)
The Champs can, in a worst case scenario, have Waze roll back certain tiles if the damage is severe enough. But it has to be catastrophic for this to take place.
It has been discussed and brought to Waze’s attention many times over the years, however, they are very adamant about accepting the relatively small overall map damage to gain the benefit of new users being able to work on things and become editors.
I would love to see some more UR control like we have with PUR, but this is one you certainly shouldn’t hold your breath on.
I believe you are correct, but there are many R4< editors around that can help in an instance like this. You would usually have a SM around if someone is causing havoc anyway.
