Reposted to finidh the previous thread and locked the previous thread with a link to here.
AFAIK if a single Google place is linked to multiple Waze places, and the Google place is selected in search, then all the linked Waze places will be presented to the user, for them to choose the appropriate one. IMO this is a good user experience and we can use it to our advantage as a disambiguation.
About the split campus issue, I would like the hospital to have that category for the area place (also hoping one day the app will highlight hospital areas in pink like livemap does now). So in your case I would use the hospital category for the place on the side which encompassess tha actual hospital.
I didnāt see any objections towards the end of the previous thread, so I think it safe to say we had agreement to the bulleted items you mention. The page was well written, and although it will need some more tweaks and updates, letās not allow it to stay dormant to another year while we wait to get it perfect. Letās put this page up, and then we can work to make it better after it is live.
This is my official re-proposal to publish this page. If no one objects over the next week, weāll make it live.
I suggest rewording this as āAs for campus/center areas, their primary category should be Hospital / Medical Care, but they should also have secondary categories in relation to what is found on that property, such as Offices or College / University, if the hospital campus is on the campus of a university.ā That seems clearer.
I created a draft with this and a few formatting changes here. I changed capitalization to sentence case and used singulars, in according with the Wikipedia style manual. I put everything about hospitals under āAdding a hospitalā and then placed stuff about urgent care clinics at the end. Also, I renamed the "Parking Lot Roads section to just āParking lotsā and added a little content about PLAs.
I think we can lose the message box at the top since the name makes it obvious it relates to mapping hospitals, and everything in our wiki is for the USA.
I agree with first two bullets, but recommend for the third that it specifies to use the ER Ambulance Entrance - Hospital Name only if it is separate from the ER for the general public.
I understand naming each of the buildings. I am not sure that they need the hospital name unless they are just numbered buildings. The āDr. Marcus Welby Medical Centerā should be fine and not have to be Dr. Marcus Welby Medical Center - St. Johnās Hospital".
If it is just āBuilding 4ā then "Building 4 - St. Johnās Hospital is fine. You might also consider what the military wazeopedia page has and have āBldg 4- St. Johnās Hospitalā and āB-4 - St. Johnās Hospitalā for consistency when labeling places and to use a vernacular that many people use.
For the Entrance labeling, unless someone is trying to use a specific entrance or parking lot, I am not sure why the entrances have to be labeled. We arenāt doing that for most places like a stadium. If the pinpoint is properly placed the dynamic routing should happen by the algorithm. Could you explain a little more why the Entrance place points are needed? Will they be required on each road into the campus? If so I think that is excessive. Thanks
For the split campus, should the one that is just offices and other facilities but not a Waze Hospital be labeled as an area office or school? That might lessen the confusion if someone searches for hospital.
We just have some examples in the Boston area where the same person foundation has donated to most of the hospitals and subsequently has buildings at all the Major hospitals named after them, I was thinking similar to what we do with malls, but not always necessary
I think some of this guidance would only apply for Large Academic Medical Centers, which have multiple buildings and most community hospitals may not need the extra guidance. I can work on some wording to clarify.
Should there be language here to address nursing homes that provide medical care? A recommendation for the correct category? Clearly they donāt belong in an urgent-care category, but I do find Places with the category set as hospital.
I find āLodgingā and āPersonal Careā to be best. Hospital / Medical Care is only for the Urgent Care and Hospitals that offer walk in service. The nursing homes with medical care are typically not open to the public so I change them to the above.
Just like a dentist or doctorās office is not āHospital / Medical Careā by the Waze Definition.
Probably would help if the category was translated to āHospital / Urgent Careā since a typical user that adds their doctorās office hasnāt read the wiki and thinks Doctor = Medical Care.
I think Lodging should be the only category for nursing homes, since Personal Care is also used for things like barbershops and salons, and a nursing home is quite different. I agree that it would be very nice to change the name of the Hospital / Medical Care to Hospital / Urgent Care. However, since US English is the default version of WME, I donāt think we would be able to make a different translation, but that is just my guess.
Iāve been told in the past to not use Lodging for anything like that since it is intended to be used by people searching for lodging. I certainly wouldnāt want a nursing home to come up if I were looking for lodging somewhere! Personal Care or Offices (since it is pretty generic) are what have been recommended to me for categories in the past. I usually just default to Office.
Texas current standards are:
Assisted Living, Nursing Homes and Hospice will use the category āLodgingā and āPersonal Careā
but this may change depending on if/when new medical categories are added
There are some short comings with the provided categories, and this of course causes confusion for new editors/wazers which we end up cleaning up.
I dont know what is the best option for nursing homes, rehab hospitals (no urgent care options) etc, but I also sometimes look at it from a practicality perspective. If you are looking for a Hospital/ Urgent Care you may not know the name but want to find a place that is going to provide medical care for you you would use a category search.
If you are looking for a nursing home, you are probably not going to do a category search in waze for the local nursing homes. Lodging could be a used category search by a wazer so having the nursing homes in here is probably not ideal either, but that leaves us with the original question what is an appropriate use for nursing homes. Solving that question may take more time, and I think we are all in agreement that the correct answer is not āHospital / Medical Careā.
I ideally would like to see at least one more category related to medical to catch these others.
We are actually working to change the translation for the category to say hospitals and Urgent Care so hopefully we can see that very soon I wouldnāt make a recommendation for nursing homes more than just to say that they donāt use the hospital category and leave that up to the discretion for now since different areas have different stances on that topic
I donāt think Iāve ever used a category-based search in Waze, so I donāt have much to contribute here. But, it seems that many like to use, or even rely upon a dedicated category for places that provide emergency and/or urgent care. So Iāll let you all sort it out and Iām sure weāll come out with something great!
Oh yeah, and when choosing default settings, we should be very careful not to undermine editorsā past work. Nothing runs editors out of town faster than that, even if just perceived. Just sayināā¦
I donāt use category search often either, but my thought on the nursing home question is that users would be more likely to use category search for ālodgingā than they would search for the āpersonal careā category to find something like a barber. I donāt like the idea of nursing homes (and apartment complexes, for that matter) flooding the lodging category search results. In SAT region we already use āpersonal careā as a temporary catch-all for non-emergency medical offices and the like, and nursing/hospice/etc facilities donāt seem like a far stretch from those.
I know Iām late to the conversationā¦and possibly beating a dead horse, but why are we entertaining the idea of mapping Ambulance entrances on hospitals that have separate entrances? The Medics are not going to be using Waze to navigate to the hospitalā¦thatās what the flashy things on the roof are for.
And you really donāt want the general public routing to them. Thatās what the Check-in desk in the ER is for.
