Welcome to Croatia!
We welcome you with open arms to edit the map. However, please read and respect the rules the Croatian community made. They may differ from the ones you have in your local community.
Thus, we invite you to read the Wiki. It’s quite short and should quickly inform you of the general stuff.

|
Please read the Wiki for specific rules in Croatia—do not apply rules from other countries as they may differ. We have tools to monitor new editors. Using them, any edit may be checked. Regardless of your level and status, you must notify the local community of any edits, especially on high-traffic roads. Failure to follow the rules may result in disciplinary action, ranging from a warning or a ban on editing in Croatia to a complete ban from Waze platforms. |
Reaching out
All editors wishing to edit in Croatia should as a first step reach out to the community before making any edits.
All international editors must join Discord or Slack during the MapRaid.
There are 3 main ways of communication in our community:
- Waze Discuss - not in real time, usually not recommended. However, still an accepted way of reaching out. Most of us check the forum frequently to check for new posts, though.
- Slack - the main way. Expect the fastest answer there.
- Discord - currently making a connection with Slack, should be done soon. Should then be a very easy way to also communicate if you don’t prefer Slack.
You can find the invites for Slack and Discord on the Main page (Glavna stranica).
Communication
Everybody has a different culture to communication, we accept that. However, taking an authoritative role, harshly blaming others or engaging in a heated argument and not taking steps to deescalate it is not only non-human, but unacceptable here.
Any and all questions (within normal limits, of course) are fine and will be answered. Feel free to ask them in communication platforms.
You also must agree to the communication rules here.
Mass edits
We are OK with them, but we most certainly aren’t a fan of them when you don’t notify us of making them. Thus, please follow the Reaching out section.

|
No matter your editing level, vandalism, illogical mass edits, edits that don't bring value to the map (farming edits) or any possibly controversial edits (without having a discussion about them) within the community are not accepted. You will be subject to discipline in any form, as mentioned above. |
We will, of course, allow them, if they are acceptable and in accordance with the local and global rules.
You may be asked, for any and all edits, the reason you made them and the proof that it is correct.
Accepted sources
The accepted list of sources should be the one Waze approves. Along with Google Maps, you can find some more accepted sources on the Main page.
State of the map
Villages and very small cities, sadly, aren’t always mapped up to standard. We invite you to map them using accepted sources, especially Geoportal DGU.

You may be able to map the map easier and faster by a lot by installing the scripts WME OpenMaps and WME Open Other Maps. |
A, D, Ž and L roads
Subject to local regulations, some roads have a road classification.
They are the following:
- Ax - Freeway. Please do not edit the freeway at all without reaching out to the community. Doing so may impact drivers.
- Dxx - Country roads (Državne ceste).
- Žxxxx - Province roads (Županijske ceste).
- Lxxxxx - Local roads (Lokalne ceste).
There may be some roads that are incorrectly classified on the map. You may edit and fix those. Use the link to the decision (Odluka o razvrstavanju javnih cesta, Narodne novine, NN 86/2024) on the homepage to find valid and invalid road classifications.
Naming convention for the roads above
The old naming conventions was the following: road marking (e.g. A1) [ - (name of road or bridge)].
It still applies for A roads, however it does not for D, Ž and L roads. Since the naming system is complicated, please do not touch it and reach out to local editors regarding fixing up incorrect markings. Also, you need to be L4 to edit road shields.
House numbers
You can add house numbers from the Geoportal DGU site, and using scripts if they are available and comply with Waze’s External Sources policy.
During an Map Raid, you are also allowed to add them, but please engage in other, more worthy edits too.
|
|
As you may know, by adding an house number you earn one edit point. However, you may be throttled after adding too many. You may use the script Edit count monitor to find out if you have been throttled. |
Respect the lock levels.
We have gone through 10+ years with these lock levels. We have made polls to make sure everybody agreed with them. Everything’s fine with them.
There is no need to lock a Dxx road to L5, nor lock a Žxxxx road to L4.
If you are not sure what the lock level should be, reach out to us and we’ll tell you (quickly).
Editing high-volume roads
Do not, we repeat, do not edit high-volume roads and roundabouts without agreement from locals. Some things are set up in some weird type of way usually with reason. Don’t overcomplicate things without a good reason.
Also, we are in the proccess of making toll prices correct and available in Croatia. Do not touch the segments labeled with a comment - they are used for toll calculating.
Turn Instruction Overrides (TIO, locally known as ‘upute’)
The chosen way of showing directions is:
Main: if going by road to somewhere: [road shield(s) - including E path if applicable] [City]/[City]
If you are somewhere, going to a road (e.g. going from the freeway, arriving in a city, going to a Dxx road): [City] [road shield(s) - including E path if applicable]
Towards: [road shield, very rare but possible] / [City when there are over two (two or one go to Main, the rest go here)]
Exit: Freeway: right-hand driving, green exit label with exit number as seen on GSW
Expressway: right-hand driving, blue exit label with exit number as seen on GSW
TTS: exiting freeway: Izlaz [exit no]: [name of exit] - for now, we’ll need to find a better way to write this - pending review
Going to freeway: Ax > direction (by cities)
This topic will need to be discussed soon by the local team.
Traffic rules & speed limits in Croatia
Highest speed limits for each road condition in Croatia.
These are some basic traffic rules and speed limits in Croatia.
On the left you can see the highest allowed speed limits in Croatia.
After a junction the speed limits go back to the default (e.g. you’re on a 40 km/h road, you pass the junction (turn or continue straight), the speed limit is 50 km/h if you are in a urban area).
If the word “Zona” goes along with an speed limit, it means the speed limit applies everywhere until you exit the zone (same sign but crossed out).
Also, if a speed limit is put along with a sign of entering a place (city, village, municipality, etc), that is the default speed limit within that place; unless specified otherwise with another sign.
Express roads and highways are clearly labeled with their signs on the beginning of them.
We use metric units. Don’t forget to change your units inside WME when editing!
