Just curious how many Wazers show up when you fire up the app during rush hour. The number has been steadily increasing here. Right now there are 168 here (north Columbus) shortly after 5 pm local time.
At some of the peaks, I’ve seen around 250-280. These days, it’s 180-220. That’s in the Beaverton, OR (western Portland suburban) area.
For months, it was always around 30 in New Orleans, regardless of the time of day.
For the past few weeks, it’s been hitting around 80 at rush hour and still drops to around 30 during the rest of the time. ATM, I’m seeing 26 (one of which is Sketch).
I saw 1,797 in downtown San Francisco during the 5 pm rush hour on a Friday, which even impressed Noam Bardin, the CEO of Waze. Wish I would’ve gotten a screen shot.
35 Wazers currently. However, seeing as I never drive during Rush Hour (as a student, I leave around 8 AM /10 AM on weekdays, and drive back any where between 4pm and midnight). I rarely see Wazer’s during these times (3-5 Wazer’s in the greater Chattanooga area).
When I drive up to home (120 miles along I-75) periodically, I periodically see Wazers every so often, maybe a total of 5 over the course of 1.5 hours…
My hometown has even less in my experience. . .

San Diego, CA metro is now between 300-500 Wazers at the peak of rush hour. I believe the single largest number I have seen myself is 447. This is up from a couple of hundred after Waze 3 for iPhone released and up from < 100 prior to Waze 3 for iPhone. I have definitely noticed that use is higher when the weather is bad (bad weather = rain in San Diego) or when traffic is unusually heavy. I agree with comments that Krankyd made in Palo Alto that Waze has a challenge in getting users to run Waze EVERY time they drive vs. just turning it on sporadically.
Hoping to see 1000 Wazers ‘near you now’ in the near future. If a local TV station would pick up ‘Waze TV’ for traffic reports I feel we could see explosive growth in San Diego.
As I have mentioned in other threads, due to very proactive editing work by a few very active editors in San Diego the maps are very mature and accurate here. We have been proactively editing street by street, neighborhood by neighborhood. (although not all that organized unfortunately) The map maturity in San Diego is MUCH better than nearby metro areas such as Orange County, Los Angeles, CA, and San Francisco/Silicon Valley.
I really feel that having fully edited maps is of very high importance to an increase the number of Wazers ‘near you now’. Of course it also helps if there is traffic that needs to be avoided 
Straying slightly off-topic - Now if Waze could get us better solutions to the following problems, Waze could really grow:
- Routing issues due to algorithms that need tweaking.
- False traffic reports in residential neighborhoods due to jam algorithm that needs better validation of jams.
- goodie/cookie munching setting that needs to be removed a month+ ago, causing bad routing.
- Pave mode that is overused in an area with mature maps.
- The overmapping of parking lots.
- No valid solution for basic Parking Lot mapping (Parking Lot roads are causing more problems then they solve due to the issue with not respecting turn restrictions and least segment path out of the Parking Lot vs. correct routing). Parking lots stubs are not viable either.
- Other back-end or client issues that cause end-users to have a bad experience with Waze.
- Map updates too slow to propagate to the app as the tile building is being re-vamped.
- No exposure to whom edited a junction last. Would be very useful to help out editors who are making errors.
- Better up front communication with Wazers that they can edit the map, how to submit an Update Request with details of the problem, better way to deal with routing when off-network (more of an issue now with CDMA iPhones and no cellular data when talking on the phone).
Since we’re talking about number of local Wazers…
It seems that Waze just begins to be useful for visually looking at traffic conditions at around 100-150 “near you now” Wazers. Useful automatic traffic avoidance seems to start kicking in around 300-350. From this I would say that critical mass for really working well at rerouting is around 600-700.
Places like SF and LA should be outstanding if it weren’t for their non-freeway maps being in such bad shape. :evil:
Although there is also the factor of how large the metro area is, how many roads there are with frequent traffic, etc.
And as we know areas with HOV/carpool lanes are highly problematic for proper jam reporting since the Waze can be snapped to the incorrect lane (freeway vs. HOV). (LA and Orange County have many)
I still can’t understand why the number of active Wazers does not correspond more closely with the number of editors. LA and Orange county seem to be in dire need or more active map editors.
There’s some, AMs even, and seem to be following the wiki, they just don’t post in the forums for whatever reason. And IGN seems active and doing correct work, but they don’t close URs (good thing).
It seems like about 5-10% of the URs so far are inside the 500m limit, which has been covered in the other thread having to do with UR traces.
Speaking of IGN, I finally came over some of their edits. They seem nit-picky. They pick one section of a road, then update that one section, and leave. Then I come along a year later, find that the rest of the road is a basemapped nightmare. No wonder why they left my area for a year . . . and still haven’t come back from what I’ve seen.
Tonight there were over 400 (don’t remember the exact number) here in the Philadelphia area.

Rush hour in my town? Well … I have seen one other Wazer (the same one!) two days in a row while on my way home from work in the morning … does that count? :lol:
IGN appears to work primarily on MPs, sometimes those coincide with URs so it looks like they are working URs. They also seem to work with the philosophy of minimum changes needed to fix the MP, which is also fine since they’re not local editors and only have the possibly outdated aerial, MP trace, and the currently out of date GPS layer to go on.

That is due to the statistical insignificance of map-editors. Given any population of 1.000 wazers, there might be 1(one) mapeditor lurking among them, or not.
In Great Britain*, yesterday’s rush hour peaked at 737 Wazers, with around 300 online at a time during the day.
There’s at least 10,000 active Wazers who are in GB, probably more. 
(*England, Scotland and Wales)
Can you count unique over a week? I understand there are circa 400k registered UK (inc NI) wazers so if only 10k or so are actively using that’s a little disappointing!
