I’ve been using overlays of OS Open Data Locator on Google Earth to put names to roads. However, I thought it was supposed to be the accurate and definitive list of street names, but no, it has mistakes in it.
The OS data has Tippett Close in Milton Keynes down as Tippet Close - as does Google Maps, and various printed maps of the area. Bing is actually correct - I have driven past the road and confirm that the street name spelling of Tippett is on the sign (Google Street View also shows this)
There’s also a Cathherine Street in Buckingham according to the OS which I know is just Catherine Street - Google have the double h spelling.
So if you’re relying on the OS Data you’ll need to double check if something looks a bit odd.
Report those instances to them and they will fix it on the next map release. I had a slight misspelling somewhere in Canterbury and reported it to them. They apologised and had it fixed.
Most of these are simple typing or admin errors. OS doesn’t have copyright easter eggs
Historically there were ‘deliberate errors’ in the OS data sets which they used to find out if people had been copying their data. That’s not to say it’s not a fowl up though.
I have it on good authority from the OSM community that there are no deliberate mistakes in the data. They work closer with OS than we do. Probably should follow suit, it works for them.
I’ve made a google earth overlay for the SP square and it puts a pin in the middle of a road segment and a bounding polygon of min and max points. I then changed it to be split by authority and settlement so there weren’t thousands of pins
If this happens please for the love of god, only give Megawazers the link until we’ve ironed out any bugs. Shouldn’t really publicise such powerful tools
