Resources for UK mapping (for the Wiki)

I’m starting this thread so that we can collect all the useful resources that are available for when we’re working on roads. These would be good to have in the UK wiki at some point.

Waze Wiki
If you haven’t checked the wiki yet, then this is the first place to go:

Online Maps*
*Of course, we’re not allowed to copy directly from any 3rd-party maps or aerials, but they can be used for research.

Road Databases
These can be useful when trying to figure out the names of junctions, restrictions and classifications.

New Roads and Junctions
When mapping new roads or junction layouts, the big online map sites are often months or years behind. These resources can help you figure out what’s what:

That’s my rough draft so far - please add any I’ve missed…

Added: Specific regions:

Tim can you add the Insight Mapping Website to your original post?

It’s an excellent resource for Nottinghamshire that even has house numbers mapped

http://info.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/insightmapping/#

Done. I added some formatting, plus the link that TonyG-UK gave in another thread.

Are there some Scottish/Welsh resources I’ve missed?

I use the royal mail postcode finder a lot as its useful to find the official town name for an area.

It’s great where you have two joined “cities” to work out where one starts and the other ends.

I’ve also been using it a lot where google maps is hopelessly wrong west of Nottingham where long eaton etc are listed as being in Ilkeston!

Here’s another useful one, though most of the links it has are already included above:
Who manages roads, motorways and roadworks

Tim, I can’t make this topic sticky - for some reason nobody can sticky topics in the language forums! I’ll check with support as to why.

I’d always assumed that it applied to all sub sub forums, but I just checked and I have the option to sticky say a thread on the map -> editing forum so it must be a property set on the language forums.

I asked Shirli once before and she reckoned she enabled all permissions. Have asked Dror again.

I’ve now stickied this topic as I needed it yesterday and it took a while to find so figured it really should be at the head of the forum.

Note: I still cant Sticky in the UK forum so as suggested by petervdveen, I moved it to the Community forum, stickied it and moved it back.

Tim, can you add to the original post some quick links to the major pages of the UK Wiki for handy reference?

'Tis done!

Tim, might wanna add this one mate. http://ris.dev.openstreetmap.org/oslmusicalchairs
Yes its the OSM map, but the data to use is the rectangle box overlay which comes from the OS Locator dataset from our Government. Afaik, it’s fully useable and non-restrictive, non-attribution, etc.

Can I add this site to the list…

http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/opendata/viewer/

It contains the OS Data, for boundaries, useful for naming towns…

In the map editor, you see a block of streets marked as no entry. You know that some of them are one way, but aren’t sure which ones. Is it really necessary to go there and produce sketches with pen and paper? Does anyone know a resource for directions of one-way streets?

The online maps I listed are a good start, plus there’s Street View. Sometimes, if the aerials are good enough, you can tell just by looking at the paint on the road.

Timbones, I’d never noticed that before! - sorry to bother you. A really big thank you for taking an interest.
For the wiki, I use http://www.streetmap.co.uk for OS maps which are pretty authoritative for identifying B roads, A roads and Trunk roads. They’re also available on http://www.getamap.ordnancesurveyleisure.co.uk/ but it doesn’t work on my system.

Bing Maps also carries OS Maps for some zoom levels. I’ve found that these are often more accurate than either of Bings or Googles own maps.

Hi,

Not sure if it has been posted before but a link to all OS Abbreviations here:

Des. . .

On-line OS maps viewer that needs to be added to the list:

I think we need to clarify to what extent we can use this and other sources for reference … as in when does it stop being reference and start being copying?

There’s and interesting discussion going on in the thread for WME with no definitive answer:

I think for the sake of legality, we need to have a serious think about how we use other data sources. Google and bing should definitely be removed from that list, if nothing else to satisfy any wandering eyes from either company that might try to bring a lawsuit.
In the UK, we really only have the use of OpenData. That OS Musical Chairs displays it brilliantly over the OSM map, and is legal as long as you use the rectangular boxes, not the OSM “background”. The rectangles come from OS Locator, part of the government OpenData license, which allows full use to any extent, albeit with attribution thrown in, so I’m guessing Waze could allow us to use it perfectly fine and just add a small note to the website at some point stating it as a possible source.
