I’m starting this thread so that we can collect all the useful resources that are available for when we’re working on roads. These would be good to have in the UK wiki at some point.
Waze Wiki
If you haven’t checked the wiki yet, then this is the first place to go:
New Roads and Junctions
When mapping new roads or junction layouts, the big online map sites are often months or years behind. These resources can help you figure out what’s what:
http://www.google.co.uk/maps (Streetview sometimes has more recent pictures than you see on the map, especially when a new road is constructed an old one. Useful for working out new junctions)
That’s my rough draft so far - please add any I’ve missed…
I’d always assumed that it applied to all sub sub forums, but I just checked and I have the option to sticky say a thread on the map -> editing forum so it must be a property set on the language forums.
Tim, might wanna add this one mate. http://ris.dev.openstreetmap.org/oslmusicalchairs
Yes its the OSM map, but the data to use is the rectangle box overlay which comes from the OS Locator dataset from our Government. Afaik, it’s fully useable and non-restrictive, non-attribution, etc.
In the map editor, you see a block of streets marked as no entry. You know that some of them are one way, but aren’t sure which ones. Is it really necessary to go there and produce sketches with pen and paper? Does anyone know a resource for directions of one-way streets?
The online maps I listed are a good start, plus there’s Street View. Sometimes, if the aerials are good enough, you can tell just by looking at the paint on the road.
Timbones, I’d never noticed that before! - sorry to bother you. A really big thank you for taking an interest.
For the wiki, I use http://www.streetmap.co.uk for OS maps which are pretty authoritative for identifying B roads, A roads and Trunk roads. They’re also available on http://www.getamap.ordnancesurveyleisure.co.uk/ but it doesn’t work on my system.
I think we need to clarify to what extent we can use this and other sources for reference … as in when does it stop being reference and start being copying?
I think for the sake of legality, we need to have a serious think about how we use other data sources. Google and bing should definitely be removed from that list, if nothing else to satisfy any wandering eyes from either company that might try to bring a lawsuit.
In the UK, we really only have the use of OpenData. That OS Musical Chairs displays it brilliantly over the OSM map, and is legal as long as you use the rectangular boxes, not the OSM “background”. The rectangles come from OS Locator, part of the government OpenData license, which allows full use to any extent, albeit with attribution thrown in, so I’m guessing Waze could allow us to use it perfectly fine and just add a small note to the website at some point stating it as a possible source.
