Hi everyone, I remember someone mentioned there is something wrong with the brand name and gas type. Could you remind me again please? I can ask Waze to correct them.
There are currently two 中石化 brand names, one is “Sinopec 中石化”, the other is “中国石化 Sinopec”. We don’t know how many gas stations are mapped to the first brand and how many mapped to the second brand, therefore we need to go through them one by one and remap them into same brand.
Secondly, on the app, we are allowed to choose our preferred gas station (probably due to special discount eligible to loyalty customers), but we are only allowed to choose one preferred brand but not more than one. For example, currently Feoso, ExxonMobil and Esso belongs to the same company group and their loyalty cards can be used in all three brands. Imagine I’m a loyalty member, I will look for gas stations under any of these three brands and exclude any other gas stations (yet I don’t want to limit my search to only one of these three brands). Moreover, if we can choose more than one preferred brand, this can also solve the first problem of having duplicate Sinopec brands (by choosing both Sinopec brands names)

Hi Keith, sorry for late reply. Just too many things to deal with at the same time when I came back from meetup. Anyway, for the 1st issue, my understanding is “Sinopec 中石化” and “中国石化 Sinopec” are a mistake. They are exactly the same brand but mistakenly put in two different names. If it is the case, we should fix it and only use one name. I’ll check with Waze if they can help us to fix it and we do not have to check and change the station brand one by one…but I have a feeling they can’t :mrgreen:
For the 2nd issue, I also believe Waze can’t do much about it and we have to think about a workaround but I will ask Waze anyway. Could you call them Esso group or something?
The duplicated “Sinopec 中石化” and “中国石化 Sinopec” brands are gone now on WME, only the former exists, but I still see both options when choosing preferred brand on the mobile app.
As for Esso group, the mother company is actually called ExxonMobil which is already a brand that I can choose on WME. I will change all of them to ExxonMobil whenever I see them.
I just checked the official website of Feoso and turns out that there are only two Feoso stations in HK, all others are under the brand name Esso. I guess I can keep the two Feoso stations as Feoso and Esso stations as ExxonMobil.
So the 1st issue is sorted now? Or do have still have to change the station name to "Sinopec 中石化” manually? You still can see the option in the app possibly it’s because we need to clear the cache or wait for next version. But I’ll ask the question again.
For 2nd issue, Waze said it may be able to be done but I believe it may take longer time to wait for it as it is a new feature to select more than one preference brand. I’ll check it again.
Just a little update on duplicated Sinopec brand.
I see that for stations other than “中国石化 Sinopec”, I cannot choose “中国石化 Sinopec” from the drop-down menu, but for stations already under the “中国石化 Sinopec” brand it stayed as “中国石化 Sinopec”. For example, this one Permalink.
Moreover I also see “中国石油 PetroChina” in that dropdown which is not available in other stations’s dropdown menu. One notable observation is that both options follows the “Chinese First, English Second” format and the Chinese text are in Simplified Chinese. Is it possibly because these are gas station brands used in China? In that case they have probably mixed up the brands from the ones we used in HK. Please clarify with Waze so that they shouldn’t remove the brands from Waze completely but only remove them in HK.
I’m going to ask Waze now. Btw, I just realised that the PLR has been named ‘Sinopec 中國石化’. PLR should not have street name at all. Not your fault. That’s Editot. We need to remove them one by one.
Ah…I have been following his style of naming Gas Stations and have been putting names of the Private Roads on all Gas Stations according to its brand. Any wiki says we shouldn’t?
I don’t know why he does that, but in my opinion this is quite convenient the way it is now, because when I click on the private road on the mobile app, I can immediately tell which brand it is, without having to do a search or type anything looking for the petrol station. As you know, buildings are not selectable on the app, only road segments can be clicked.
hm…I didn’t think about it. Maybe it is a good idea to leave it as it is if it benefit us.
Just realised that the road is PR instead of PLR. IIRC penalty for PR is much larger than PLR. Well, I don’t think it makes much differences for gas station.
