I have read the Places/Gas station entry in wazopedia, Places/Gas station. The article is getting old and does not explain how the gas station brands work. Since the duplicate appears when editing gas stations near the border between Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire, I have looked at the gas station brands available in these two countries. It seems that the lists of national brands are merged in the border area. And since Ivory Coast has an entry “Star Oil” and Ghana has spelled the same brand “StarOil”, this appears as two brands. Should we do anything about this?

Hello @CuttySpark,

Thank you for your report. I have opened an internal ticket in order to look into this specific case. I will let you know once there is an update.

Best regards,
Olesya

@Olesya , any update, please ?

Hi @asterix06,

The issue is still being worked on.
@CuttySpark’s observation has been confirmed by the team; namely, StarOil is defined in Ghana while Star Oil is defined in Côte d’Ivoire. As the location is close to the border, WME unites the brands list from the the two countries. We asked the team whether this can be made more precise.
I will update this thread once we have an update.

All the best,
Olesya

That’s what reported …..
and it would’ve a good thing if it should be possible to avoid to show Poi coming from other countries …to avoid possible (easy)editing mistake by editors not very experts .

Another question : it would be really Interesting to discover if matching feed BOT is using the same system…connecting to venues …located in nearby countries

I think the most elegant solution would be to change the brand “StarOil” to “Star Oil” in the database. Thereby correcting the spelling on all stations in Ghana with the StarOil/Star Oil brand without the need for editors to manually change this. WME is not good at finding such errors and no editor has a list of all stations in the map.

Hello @CuttySpark,

Thank you for sharing your feedback, I have passed it the team. I will let you know once this idea has been reviewed.

Best reagards,
Olesya

Hello Olesya,
I requested renaming of two gas station brands on August 18th. Apco → Wapco and StarOil → Star Oil. The first change has been applied. Now Apco is no longer in the list of brands. But all stations with the Apco brand must still be visited to change the brand since the old value “Apco” is not changed on the POI. For Wapco it is doable since I know where these relatively few stations are. But for StarOil it is an impossible task for one man. There must be more than 100 Star Oil stations in Ghana. And I have no tool to find them. If anyone knows of a search tool for POI, please let me know.
In addition, the requested change to “Star Oil” has not been done.

Kind regards

Hi @CuttySpark,

Thank you for your input!
I’m going to create an internal task for this.
Just to confirm, you would need is a list of all POIs with brand name StarOil in Ghana, correct?

Best regards,
Olesya

Hi Olesya,
that is correct. A list with permalinks to POI (gas stations and other types) with names starting with “star” is what I need to visit all StarOil stations. Wazers may have chosen wrong type of POI when creating them, and spelling is not always correct.

In addition you can check why the renaming did not go through. It was submitted August 18th and only partly executed. (Apco is now Wapco).

Here is a copy of the gas station brands request I submitted:

Kind regards
CuttySpark

Hi @CuttySpark,

Many thanks for your response. I have created an internal ticket to ask for the data you mentioned (it might take some time until I get a response). When it comes to the brand rename request, I’m not sure if I’ll be able to get any insight into it, but I’ll let you know if I manage to find out more about it.

Best regards,
Olesya

Hi Olesya
After considering, I think any POI with «Star» in the name is interesting. Some people give names like «Gas Station Star Oil», so only listing the ones starting with star would not be complete.

Kind regards
CuttySpark

Good point, I’ll update the internal ticket accordingly. :+1:

Have a great time at the meetup!

Hi Olesya,
here is a list of the Star Oil stations I have found. How long is your list? I am sure there are a few more, perhaps with some misspelling and wrong venue type etc.

Hi @CuttySpark,

I’m checking with the team at the moment. The task hasn’t been completed yet.
I have requested access to the document you have shared.

Update: I just saw the list you created - you must have put tremendous effort to it! I just wanted to say - chapeau bas from my end!

Thank you so much for your commitment to this matter!

Best regards,
Olesya

Thanks Olesya,
I have used the Star Oil website to find stations and added a few more I have come across. I still believe that there are some more stations in the map. I guess WME has been designed without any good search tools to make it impossible to extract complete data sets from the map.
That also hinders the editors in fixing such issues as the StarOil / Star Oil thing effectively.
Searching the database should be quite easy for the engineers, though.
Kind regards
Ingmar

Thank you for sharing your method, Ingmar @CuttySpark. Frankly, I did’t expect this long of a list.

It’s just a matter of when they get round to it. I’ll get back to you on that, once there is an update on the task.

Warm regards,
Olesya

Thanks Olesya,
Star Oil claims to have 240 stations nationwide: About Us - StarOil
So there are both more stations already in the map and many that can be added.
Kind regards
Ingmar

Hi @CuttySpark,

I hope you are well.
I’d just like to check whether this task is still relevant (as there’s been quite some wait)—the team would be getting round to it, so I wanted to confirm whether the list you initially requested is still required.

All the best,
Olesya
