Please name ramps, New Lenox, IL

https://www.waze.com/editor/?lon=-87.98368&lat=41.55006&zoom=4&layers=BFTFFTTTFTTFTTTTFTTTTFT&segments=67903536,67903534,67903535

The above segments should all be named Exit to US-6 / Southwest Hwy. I’ve submitted a report both driving and via the Live Map, but the report just gets closed without changes being made. Without these named, traveling to 1900 Silver Cross Blvd, New Lenox, IL 60451 from the North on I-355 gets a navigation prompt to turn on Silver Cross Blvd from I-355 S and you can pass up the exit to the Silver Cross Hospital.

Hopefully someone can update this or comment why it is not correct to name these segments.

Not true.

The exit ramp has been named, though.

Well, it is true unfortunately for this ramp as I’ve been traveling it for a few weeks now to visit a family member in the hospital and the exit was easily passed by the driver on the first visit. Every visit since then we’ve reported the issue and the issue is just closed. Last night was the last occurrence.

The name of a road segment has no bearing on how Waze directs you. The way Waze is directing you is the fastest (or shorter depending on your settings) to your destination from your point of origin. Without an exit ramp being named, Waze will tell you “in one mile, exit right”, then “in 500 feet, exit right” then “turn left (or right) onto XYZ Rd.” With it named, now it will say “in 500 feet, exit right at exit to US-six pause southwest highway” but I’m willing to bet $100 that your directions won’t change.

Then you’d be sending me $100 dollars. Calling someone out like this isn’t very kind.

It does not call out the exit properly at the distance to the exit. Waze “thinks” you do not have to turn until Silver Cross Blvd and that being a left while traveling South on I-355 makes the distance incorrect.

I’m don’t mean to be calling you out. I’m just telling you that the name of a road segment doesn’t have any bearing on the directions given by Waze.

Also have you refresh the maps on the client?

I took a look at the current state in the editor and things look like they will give the desired results. I’ll check the live map once today’s changes get pushed out.

I didn’t think about that, but that is a good idea. I guess I’ll do that to mine, now.

Here’s a turn list from the client:

You can see that the unnamed exit on the client, but it does not appear in the navigation banner. The next item does for some reason… It was the same before and after a refresh of the maps on my client. Also, note that I am on the beta which could be suspect with the “Map changes” item “Navigation line: new navigation line, displays road labels with names of streets on the route.”

That “exit right” should now have a name attached to it (after the next update), but it doesn’t affect your navigation.

I don’t know jack. Especially when it comes to ramps. With that said, is it helpful/applicable to do the following? Perhaps with a Wayfinder?

Wit

Nice drawing, but no. Waze will automatically tell the driver to turn left or right.

Okay, so perhaps I’m starting to understand this circumstance almost enough to ask at least one reasonable question. Smack me down as necessary, I have thick skin.

If a ramp-to-ramp split does not give additional instructions (i.e. the transference from one ramp segment to another), then just_pedal’s “turn list from the client” makes complete sense to me.

Further, it looks like the right onto Southwest Hwy is a regular right turn and far enough away from the main segment to warrant its own segment.

So, if the following is true:
A ramp-to-ramp split does not give additional instructions, and an ending ramp segment provides no instruction onto a roadway (figures you’re using a ramp which, in most cases probably points you in the right direction).

What would be the best way to instruct the driver to “exit right, then turn right onto Southwest Hwy, then turn left onto Silver Cross Blvd”?

In that drawing, the road segment to the right will not get a “turn right” but a “bear right” or “stay to the right” (I can’t remember which one). Coming off of the highway, the driver would have received instructions to “exit right” then the “stay to the right onto Southwest Highway” as they get closer to that intersection. After turning right, they should then get directions to “turn left at Silver Cross Blvd” depending on how far Silver Cross is to that intersection.

“turn right (or left)” from Waze only comes from hard turns. If the driver was going left on Southwest Highway, then Waze would instruct “turn left at Southwest Highway.”

Understood. Is this behavior of ramps different from other road segments?

Frequently, I take a route where the exit from the interstate is ~exactly one mile from the 1st right turn. The 1st right turn is the next instruction of the route.

In the following two (2) examples of the same scenario the Text-To-Speech (TTS) output is…

exit or turn v001.JPG

To be more succinct, can the same thing be done with the ending ramp segment to instruct the driver to turn right?

Sorry, I feel like I’m simply missing something. Please try to help me understand.

The exit/keep/turn left or right directions are primarily based on the angle at which two segments meet. Segment names and road types also plays a factor but to a lesser extent.

An excerpt from the Junction Style Guide:

If you want a real mind bender, check out the Geometry section. I have gone through this part several times and it’s finally starting to gel.

In the 2nd example, the 90 degree turn is causing Waze to say “turn right” as opposed to the “exit right” for the ramp or “stay to the left” although I did discover something tonight, which I need to investigate further.

Updates have been pushed out through Saturday so the recent changes are now available in the client and live map.

Live map routing from just before the exit US-6 to Silver Cross Blvd shows the following instructions:

keep right onto Exit to US-6 / Southwest Hwy
keep right onto Southwest Hwy
turn left onto Silver Cross Bld
arrive at destination

I’m pretty sure the first instruction will be announced in TTS as “Exit right” since it will be a segment departing a freeway segment.

Drove this route twice this weekend and the reported issue was still present Saturday morning, but Sunday evening it was working just as ArlenBystander has listed.
