Hi all

In NZ we hardly lock anything except Auckland Motorways etc. Top to Bottom level 1 and it works well.

It sounds like in Europe the lock everything.

Lets use an example

1 - Stuart Hwy (Level 4 lock)

In NZ if I live it this house I can just draw a road (level one), With the proposed upgraded locks you would need a unlock requests to the 10 people (guess) that are at that level.

This looks like the most likely outcome

all streets Lvl 1 (default) Primaries and up at Lvl 2. Highways, etc at Lvl 4

I believe there is going to be an automated lock in the future, based on traffic flow?

Personally I only lock complex motorway junctions, once I’ve checked routing on the live map, to L3

There is a push from some quarters for wholesale level 4 locking

I disagree with this and suggest we wait for the automated system.

My personal feeling is that in Europe they have a many more wazers than Aussie and NZ per square meter and probably need a higher locking system.

I understand the increased need for locking unban areas but for the life of me I can’t work out why roads in the middle of the desert need level 4 locking. I’m not even sure you can get cell phone coverage for a level one to edit?

This poll is useless without all information

There are a number of reasons to lock, some of which may/may not apply to your country. First of all, there is the need to protect vital routes from vandalism. This CAN include a road through the desert, if it is vital for routing long-distance. There is the need to protect “exceptions” from those who fail to recognize there is a special case on the ground that needs exceptional mapping. Areas can be repeatedly changed back to whatever false situation is seen on aerials, and that can be a reason to lock.

The lockingsystem that is currently in betatesting will, more or less, mimic at least some of these characteristics by locking those segments recognized as vital with higher locklevels. But it is still in beta and we have no clue when it will make it to the public.

And finally: locked roads will draw/force new editors to visit the forum/read the wiki. Threads will appear of some complaining about the locks but most will agree there is reasoning behind it. Other threads will appear where changes to locked roads will be argued and this has the benefit that these changes are somehow documented/publicized and not made all too random. Remember: a route can cross 100’s or 1000’s of segments and nodes, and just a handful of errors on the way can spoil your whole day

Thanks fvwazing. That’s the part ‘why locking’.

I’m discussing this (and a lot more) with the CM’s right now. Locking is just a small part of it.

It’s pretty clear a better organisation is needed. I’ll try to post a global plan that I have in mind. Your input is also needed to finetune the plan. Let’s start discussing as soon I started the thread for that…

,and what would be the logic for level 6 lock on landmark “Sea/Lake/Levee”

We (or waze staff) map big landmarks like sea just global. Local users can finetune it by creating an overlapping landmark.

At the moment we can’t lock at a specific rank like roadtypes.

Locks for rivers for example is very welcome. It is a lot of work to draw them. By a simple mistake it could be deleted. This happend a lot around the world.

And there is the danger of users that will adjust it to detailed, which results in strange display in the client (triangle shaped).

Let’s continue the discussion in Managing Australia. For now, I wil lock this thread to keep it centralised.
