What a change. We may need new locking rules. Gone are the old locks and its now locked to rank level. Makes my job harder to fix user reported errors but gives incentive to everyone to move up levels. So, back to the lock rules, when will the roads justify higher locking? All primary roads and above? There seem to be enough level 3s around. Happy to hear everyone’s thoughts?
It is very easy to become a lvl 3 editor. For this reason I support all primary roads and above having a lvl 3 lock. However I don’t support locking anything that is missing joining roads.
It seems like other countries take the approach to lock freeways and highways. I think in the theory that newbies won’t make a drastic mistake and disconnect a major road.
I though take the view that it’s better leave all locking off, for now.
My theory is that most people are trying to do their best and if its a major road or intersection that needs fixing, they’ll ask if they’re unsure. And if an edit wasn’t well thought through, there will soon be user reports popping real soon in that spot and the last edit ID is logged.
The benefit of this is that new editors don’t get discouraged that they can’t edit a locked segment straight away. Particularly as we’re trying to encourage more editors, we don’t want to make it harder for them to get involved in the early days.
If we find that inexperienced users are causing dramas in major routes, then we should lock those, but in general I think we should keep it loose.
Locking is now on by default for roads starting at level 1 in the new WME. Have a look at any road. Would seem then the consensus so far is to leave the lock level alone unless there is an issue right?
I also support leaving locking alone as a general rule. Unless there is a specific need.
100% agree
Locking is bad for growth
So how or do we need to resolve Level 4 roads as I keep having to raise a unlock request to resolve map errors. Will they be downgraded to Level 3 at least? Or left to a level 4 to edit and resolve. It starting to clog up Sydney.
I’ve not been editing for a couple of weeks, and today I got back to do some editing today.
To my dismay, a huge number of street segments have been renamed from the (correct) abbreviated form to their (incorrect) long form, and then locked at level 4, the level above my editing level.
The problem is that I’m trying to fix streets and set them in their proper suburbs and this locking is preventing me from doing so. It also prevents me from fixing their alignment.
I’ve sent off a PM to the editor who has been doing the renaming and the locking, but from the look at the dates of editing and the extent of the areas locked, it looks like this has been going on for at least the last month, and possibly affecting hundreds of street segments. I’ve asked this editor to not lock streets they edit, and to not rename streets from their abbreviated names to their long names, and to unlock the streets they have locked without a good reason for doing so. I think I asked nicely - I hope it is received so.
To me, the frustration of having to request a level 4 editor to unlock so many locked segments is something likely to make me give up editing in Waze, due to the uncertain turn around time for requests being responded to.

Hi Bill
I thinking, does it really matter if its says “Rd” or “Road”? But yes locking is not ideal.
Hey come down to Tasmania with me and we will have you at level 5 in no time ![]()
Hi guys/gals,
Since we have a nice new editor to play with now, I’m all for keeping the roads to a Level 1 unless they’re Main Highways/ Freeways, etc, which we’ll lock at Level 4 for now as these shouldn’t be changed once created.
Regarding Unlock requests, keep them coming in (in the appropriate forum), and I’ll drop the roads to a more acceptable level as we expand.
Not really, I just like to have fewer pixels on the Client display (though showing my own hypocrisy since I support the “, State” suffix on suburb labels - but I justify it by the far fewer suburb labels compared to the street labels.)
It’s the locking of streets and landmarks that irks me the most. Many of the oldest-created major streets and highways in Sydney don’t have accurate City field designations and thus don’t match their surrounding suburbs. This is why, from my point of view, locking these major roads/highways will cause me problems. I know it’s not that hard becoming a level 3 editor, but my currrent problem with locked segments everywhere was caused by a level 4 editor. Like many other things in life, I want the privileges set so I’m free to do what I want, but everyone else should be restricted ('cause they can’t be trusted but I can).
Should I be concentrating on mapping new roads rather than perfecting old roads? Possibly, but it’s important that new Waze users be able to find their own home and work addresses, since this is probably the first thing they do a search for when they run the client app for the first time. If they don’t find these two locations, this might be the first and last time they ever start up the Waze app.
Another 14k edits and I’ll be able to apply for level 4 :D. Therre is still huge amounts of work to do in Sydney too. ![]()
Take your pick… there’s plenty of stuff to choose from! I’m finding I’m spending a lot of my spare time fixing up old roads and intersections to ensure names and directions work correctly. It’s a case of hit and miss finding them on the Waze map. Considering there is SO much road to cover.

If anyone sees some over zealous locking, be nice and try to contact the editor on why because you want to understand.
The wiki has this guidance on locking: http://www.waze.com/wiki/index.php/Best_map_editing_practice#Locking_Segments
…and if all else fails…
Contact a CM <here>.
I wonder if there is a way to universally drop all level 4 locks to level 3 at Waze’s end? It seems to me that most of the issues were caused by locks being applied at level 3, but then when the editor who placed the lock went to level 4, so did the locks under the old system.
It’s frustrating at the moment - I’ve just looked at three relatively simple URs, which ought to be simple to fix, but which I can’t touch because they’re locked at level 4.
If Waze were able to set all current level 4 locks to level 3, our turnaround rate would be significantly faster, our frustration levels would be significantly lower, and the map would remain reasonably protected!
Probably it’s new for you…Soon a new protection system will be launched in WME. Segments get a lock of the system, depending on the importancy of that segment.
What do you think of creating ‘projects’ where editors can work on. There can be big projejcts like mapping all freeways, but also some smaller projects like cleaning up an area. It’s much better administrating. And we have an overview of what is done and who is working on what…
I like the idea of a “project” to help focus on a particular thing or area.
Do you think the CMs should nominate one thing to start on? I think if we have a poll we’ll be deciding forever…
