Pothole Alert Timeout Duration Change

Hello all, please see Waze’s post below regarding the recent change pertaining to pothole alerts timing out. Thank you Noam for agreeing with our suggestion, this is certainly something the community will benefit from.

NOTE: This only applies to United States wazers at the moment.

Does the 48 hour period reset if there are thanks? What I’d there are no success through that segment? I think this can still use improvement. Not that I’m unhappy with the improvements so far!

If I have reported not there and they reappear, does that mean the user re-reported it again?

It requires multiple users to hit “not there” before Waze will inactivate it.

Since this change I have noticed many more triangle icons on the map. Maybe we should visit the idea of changing the icon for pothole? A curvy line perhaps?

Let’s be cute. I vote for a pot.

This is a good idea in principle, but it seems that in practice, there are a few users who are abusing the reporting feature, cluttering up the map with alerts for potholes that aren’t there: alerts that never disappear, since 48 hours gives them plenty of time to thank themselves too. It weakens the alert feature by retaining alerts for nonexistent or inconsequential hazards. In my town, 20 new potholes are being reported by one user every day. I’ve also seen similar abuse in other nearby towns.

Not a bad idea. How about a pot with a crack in it?

I see a ton of pothole reports where there aren’t any. I mean my tolerance for pothole reporting is if it’s dangerous. Like bend a rim or get a flat or bottom out at highway speeds dangerous. I hate when people report pothole for the littlest bump or heck, a manhole cover. Since 90% of them are false, and one abuser JimmyBones22 was actually suspended from reporting for a bit, but now he’s right back to it as of 7 hours ago… A different icon would help me from these “cried wolf” reports.

I also see them used them for rough road surface (e.g., during a repave), but those actually seem more legit than the lunchbag holes.

I mean look at this. It’s like this all over the place. Most of these are from anonymous. We need a new icon or the ability to turn off pothole alerts. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1422416902.587613.jpg

This anonymous reporting needs to stop. Every Wazer who doesn’t create an account with their own username should be given a unique anonymous user name for tracking purposes and abuse monitoring. If those are all reports for potholes that really makes the map look bad.

I can agree with that. There are a lot of reports along Rt. 100 in PA here as well:

It looks really bad on the Waze app. The triangle icon can mean more than one thing, like object on road or shoulder for example. But in these cases they are all potholes. I’ve been using Waze for awhile now, since the iPhone 4 (I’m on the 6 plus now). Its like all of a sudden this seems to be an issue and the only thing I can pinpoint is word got out about these pothole timeout changes and people are reporting just to get points.

I would have to drive Rt. 100 to verify all of those and I won’t be driving that entire stretch for a little bit.

… or they were doing this all along, but until now they faded from view so quickly that it never become much of a litter issue.

I’d love a block feature where it ignores all reports and communication from a block list of users.

I have a guy in my neighborhood reporting every single manhole cover as a pothole report. If I could add JimmyBones22 to a block list so his reports do not show up in my Waze account, that would solve these troublemakers for me.

I’m in Las Vegas now and either their roads are awesome or no one has time to litter the map with pothole reports. I would have to gather that their roads are awesome though. The winter weather and vastly changing temperature can do a number to paved road surfaces in the northeast US.

Anyway lots of active wazers traveling on the map here in Vegas.

Anonymous user reports may not be a problem much longer . . . . . . . :sunglasses:

That will be great when that goes live! That would stop things like this which are all anonymous pothole reports. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1423352450.031698.jpg

If you know their Waze user name, something can actually be done about them.

One of the things I’ve wished for ever since I started using Waze was that they’d revamp the points system to remove the incentive for people to spam the system with bogus reports and URs.

I have someone in my area who spams the map every day with the same bogus pothole reports. I have their username, who do I report it to?
