There is a UR on Handford Rd, Ipswich (https://www.waze.com/en-GB/editor/?env=row&lon=1.14259&lat=52.05877&layers=773&zoom=5&segments=143406620) that indicates a right turn not allowed onto Burlington Rd because it’s restricted for Access Only. Further west Handford Cut is also restricted in the same way. This is obviously done to stop people jumping the queues on a busy rd by routing up to London Rd and back down to the major junction.
Initially I assumed I could just set the streets to Private to stop through routing, but looking closer they are only restricted from the south end, meaning people living the other side of London Rd should be able to route through to Handford Rd via these streets (Private streets would stop this).
Is there a better way of restricting this that I’m missing? I don’t believe turn restrictions are feasible as destinations on those roads would then always go the long way round?
It may look a bit odd, but I would divide the carriageway at the southern end of Burlington Road. Instead of one 2-way segment, turn it into two 1-way segments. You can then make the northbound segment private and the southbound segment normal street.
Given that it’s a very short segment already, make sure you keep both segments just above 5m in length, since Waze can have problems with segments less that 5m. WME Toolbox has a useful measuring tool that will let you get it just over 5m.
Given that it will be odd, I reckon a L4 lock will be appropriate.
Unless something has changed in the routing calculations, then IIRC routing through a private segment is only considered if no other (reasonable) routes exist. So marking only the southern entry point with such a construct would, unless your destination happened to be on that short stretch of private road, still cause routes to be generated that used the northern entry point.
If, after preventing through-routing from the south, the next highest priority is to permit correct routing from the south to destinations on the restricted roads, then it’d be better to place the construct at the northern ends of the restricted streets, so that routing to the streets could still be achieved. This would however then prevent northbound routing out of these streets, so if that was the next highest priority then your suggestion would then work better.
Either way, short of splitting the entire street to make it a private one-way northbound and a public one-way southbound (which would introduce problems all of its own), I can’t see a way to ensure that Waze could generate correct routes for all users in this area.
The entire estate between Bramford Rd and Hamford Rd is “access only”, limited by these 6 segments. You can either mark the entire lot as private, or just those 6 entrances/exits.
That would prevent the reported ‘small detour’, as well as this illegal route.
Alternatively, you could split the 2-way segments into pairs of 1-way segments, and then only have to restrict the 4 entrances. This would look less conspicuous on the user map, and more conspicuous on the editor map.
