Hiya all,

On return from a recent backpacking trip in the Dolly Sods Wilderness, I noticed lots of problems with the Waze map in that area. I fixed up what I could myself, but cell coverage is very spotty in those parts, so despite having driven there recently (and being low ranked), I can’t fix it myself since its outside my editable area.

Here goes.

  1. Jordan Run Road, in its entirety, is two way. Much of it is marked one way currently. Link to the south end. Link to the south end: https://www.waze.com/editor/?zoom=4&lat=38.9753&lon=-79.28442&layers=133&env=usa

  2. Dolly Sods Road (FR-19), in its entirety, is two way. It’s an improved road with a gravel surface; parts are marked 4x4, I don’t think that’s right (I’ve driven it in a Honda Fit). From its junction with Jordan Run Road, to FR-75, any other road branching from it should be marked as private (all are signed ‘no tresspassing’, most are gated). https://www.waze.com/editor/?zoom=3&lat=38.97907&lon=-79.31278&layers=133&env=usa

  3. The western end of Dolly Sods Road (FR-19) is missing. From the current end, it should continue north to join Jenningston-Lanesville Rd (Co 45/4). You can clearly see its path in the satellite view. https://www.waze.com/editor/?zoom=4&lat=38.96901&lon=-79.39623&layers=133&env=usa

ps, I’d love to help out with editing the map on my own, but the places I drive which need attention all lack cell coverage (Shennadoah NP, GW/Jeff Nat’l Forest, parts of WV). I’ve searched the forum, but can’t seem to find a way to contribute to those areas. Any suggestions?

I’ve attempted to clean up Jordan Run Rd, Dolly Sods Rd and Jenningston-Lanesville Rd.

The cell coverage issue is a problem. Waze is definitely designed to work with cell coverage. If there are areas that you frequent and are familiar enough will to put them in working order, you can ask for Area Manager status for such areas.

There are several areas which I frequent (and know well enough) without cell coverage. Becoming an Area Manager sounds like a lot of responsibility, and I really don’t have the time for that.

I hope the waze team is aware that dependence on a reliable data connection is really hampering improvement of the map in rural areas of the US. I know traffic isn’t a problem in those areas, and that’s waze’s primary motivator, but I’d love to be able to throw out my Garmin and use only waze, for all my drives, not just ones in metro areas.
