Rank 3: Detroit, MI

I am a lowly rank 1 editor trying to add some roads that connect to level 2 and 3 roads as shown on the permalink below:

The top connections and area are for a building, and its parking lot, built more recently than the satellite photograph. Its road connects to Beaubien on the West and the expressway service drive on the East. All turn directions are allowed but there is an issue with the service drive entrance/exit. This is only accessible by employees (key-card). I know there is no way to directly designate this, so wondered if “never permissible” time restrictions on the turns or other technique was appropriate so traffic that goes that way does not create map errors but also so nobody is actually routed that way.

The bottom connections and area are for the Benjamin Carson High School of Science and Medicine. It is drawn to match the underlying satellite photo.

Hey meWazin–

I’ve connected the Hospital PLRs onto both Beaubien and the Chrysler Service Drive. For your card-access, I removed the split and turned it to outward only Private Road, similar to what is done for other controlled-access driveways. The idea here is if you have permission to use it, you know how to get to it, and Waze should never route across it. I also changed the public road-in to a PLR. I left the odd split in the public entrance because I don’t know what it looks like IRL. It may not need to be split.

I connected the high school to Beaubien, an L3 will still need to do the turn allowance(s) on Mack and also render their opinion on whether the split entrance/exit there is necessary. Permalink

I made the connections to Mack Ave but removed the split. The Area Manager is free to override if desired though. IMO, for the amount of traffic going in that would be inconvenienced by having the right turn instruction be 10m or so off, it’s not worth the complication. IMO, there are already too many parking lot roads there, and I would recommend simplifying it so that one PLR just goes through since it’s a destination where turn instructions are really needed (especially not the wonky PLR instructions). No junctions between Mack/St. Antoine and Beaubien.

Also, check the wiki for Point versus Area places. I just noticed Friendship Baptist, which should be a point, but I didn’t look around at the other Area Places in detail, which seemed to mostly be hospitals. Also, for legitimate Area Places like Tolan Playfield, move the “target” that defaults to the center of the polygon to wherever people would most likely park.

Finally, with an outdated aerial view, try to lock segments as high as possible. I left the northern section at 1 in case you want to tweak anything meWazin, but it should probably be at least 2 so that no one just comes along and deletes assuming the aerial is correct.
