As red-light cameras go dark, was it a boon for safety or a bust?
Please do not add or approve any cameras statewide until NJ-DOT decides on how to proceed. The wiki has been updated to reflect the change.
SEE EDIT BELOW - (Regarding existing cameras, please attempt to disable the ones you have approved. If you are unable to disable them due to save errors please add the locations Permalink to this list and then delete them.)
UPDATE 12-19: Please disregard the above parenthesized guidance and DO NOT delete or disable any existing cameras. Waze is working on a back-end solution and any modifications may effect the outcome. However, new cameras should not be added or approved until the state reaches a final decision.
Regarding potential UR’s reporting that the cameras no longer active, simply respond that we are aware and awaiting a final decision from the DOT.
Thank you!
UPDATE: The guidance across the state is to remove any existing cameras and not to approve any new ones.
This doesnt mean we should go on a mass camera-witch-hunt, just delete them as you come across them. Also, if you notice a new (or old editor) creating or approving cameras please refer them to this thread and the wiki.
AMEN!
Oh I would so love to go an a mass camera witch hunt
Seriously. Not only do the same ones keep popping up no matter how many times I say they’re not there; folks still keep putting in traffic observation cameras as though they’re red light cameras. Waze should adjust their code to not allow them in states where they’re illegal.
That would be nice. It may involve too much coding for it to be a high priority though; and laws do change. What would be nicer is if the option to report cameras isn’t a prominent icon in the regular report box or listed as a map issue, half the reports are mistakes or uneducated wazers. IIRC this request is on the wishlist/Google doc and is at least on Waze’s radar.
Also, pushing “not there” in the app for cameras doesn’t actually have any effect on the map in the US like it does in the ROW.
Oh and welcome to the forums and congrats and your first post!
Kobes1878, Phantom and Q: We have reports from boots on the ground on US-1 that the camera alert is still present at Plainfield Ave and US-1 in the app. When looking at this in WME, there are no cameras present there.
In getting the intel via the NJ Editors Google Hangout, we have a screen cap of the cameras in place. These have all sounded alerts.
Can we ask orbitc to have Waze investigate?
UPDATE: Local editor confirmed there are no cameras after a map data refresh.
