Request a Text-to-Speech (TTS) Change

Template of topic 380525, post 1

Is the Waze app pronouncing a street or city wrong? That’s easy to fix. Please do not override the pronunciation using the TTS box in the turn instructions. Follow the below steps to submit a request and we will apply a change to the whole country instead of just one turn.

Preparing your TTS Change Request

Before requesting your change, you need to determine the best way to phonetically spell your street or city name so that the Waze gives the pronunciation you are expecting. This spelling, or “string”, is best worked out in WME as follows

  1. Open the Waze Map Editor (WME)
  2. Use the search box at the top to find the road. You may need to include the city and country.
  3. Click on the road that is pronounced incorrectly.
  4. Click on the Primary Road Name field in the left pane
  5. At the end of the Street field, you can select the speaker button to open the play panel.
  6. From the drop down, select English (Australia), English (UK) or English (which the default is US) and press the Play sound button. You should hear the street name pronounced.
  7. As you are at this step, we are assuming it is currently pronounced incorrectly. Spell out the name how you would say it (phonetically), into the address box, and repeat the process of playing the sound until it sounds correct. You might need to do this a few times until it sounds just right. The following are some previous TTS examples to help demonstrate this process
Current spelling of City/Street Proposed phonetic spelling/String
Cranbourne Cran-burn
Northcote Northkert
Beaconsfield Beacons field
Ravenshoe Ravens-ho
Willesden Will-es-den
Ballan B'hlan

8. When you’re happy, make a note of how you’ve phonetically spelt out the city/street, you’ll need it shortly!

9. Use either Reporting via WME, or Reporting via Waze Australia Discord methods as below.

Reporting via Waze Map Editor

  1. Press the ‘Report a problem’ button in the play panel and complete the Google form to submit your change request.
  2. Changes are approved by Local Champs. If they have questions, they may need to contact you. If you’re a Waze map editor, it’s a good idea to notify a Local Champ of your request as Waze will not tell us who requested the request for privacy reasons.
  3. Requests are sent to a language team. It may take up to 14 days to notify a local champ of a new change. So once again, it’s a great idea to give a local champ a nudge so they can follow it up for you.

Reporting via Waze Australia Discord Server

If you haven’t already, join the Waze Australia Discord server. Download the Discord app for the best user experience.

Follow the instructions and provide some basic information.

Once you have joined,

  1. Select the #tts channel from the left channel list. It is under the Australia heading (headings can sometimes be collapsed).
  2. Tell us the street or city that sounds incorrect, spell out the name how you would say it, tell us which language you’re using and ideally include a permalink to the street for testing purposes.
  3. A local champ will review your request within 48 hours, discuss it with you and take action.

Thanks for helping to make the Waze voice better!
