We have some pretty major roadworks starting on Monday near us (a 1 year project), it would be good to be able to put these sorts of events into Waze somehow so it could route around them if possible.
As long as the report is not available, you can mark the road as ´No Entry`.
This is a requested item that has been on the request list for a while. The quick work around to solve this is to do exactly what “gerben” suggests. If it is a long term project, the simplest solution is to mark the section of road as “no entry”. You could also disconnect both ends of the segment effected, and label it as under construction like I did here: http://www.waze.com/cartouche/?zoom=7&lat=34.15399&lon=-118.34497&layers=BTFTFFFFFFFFFFFFFTTTTT
I also think this is a great idea and was about to request it myself. I live in an area prone to hurricanes and after a good storm there are a lot of closed roads due to wash outs. While some of these are closed for many months, others are only closed for a matter of weeks. It would be nice to be able to flag a section of road as temporarily closed w/o having to edit that road or geometry. This should obviously affect routing as well by flagging the road as closed and also be noted on the map for anyone driving in that area. Possibly with a notice and that section of the road being red or hashed out.
I envision this being an option in cartouche I.E.: Temporary closure from point A to point B. A note could then be added.
This should also be an option for ongoing road work as well. For example… there is a large bridge in this area which spans across the Chesapeake bay… The west bound span of this bridge is closed for a set schedule every night for a project projected to last 3 years. Waze should be able to be made aware of this work and the schedule and issue a hazard and note accordingly.
All of this would of course rest on area managers or an individual willing to add and remove these from the map DB but I don’t see that as being a problem in higher populated areas.
Great idea. But it needn’t apply just to closed roads. Roadworks can cause long delays on major roads if there is a single lane closed, or even worse, temporary traffic lights. A few years ago, a road on my route to work underwent roadworks that lasted 2 or 3 months. It wasn’t possible to close the road, they just put up temporary traffic lights that ran 24 hours a day (normally these things generally just run off-peak on major roads), and caused absolute havoc during the rush hour. If you didn’t take a different route, they caused up to 30 or 40 minutes’ delay. As it stands at the moment, Waze would eventually learn that the average speeds on that segment of road were low and would route round it, but that would take time. Equally when the roadworks were over and the lights were removed, again it would take Waze a while to build the average speeds back up again and route users back on the main road.
If there was an option to post a ‘severe delays likely’ flag on a road, which could be removed as soon as the work was completed, that would enable Waze to immediately re-route when the trouble was over. Of course, that does rely on someone manually putting the flag on and taking it off ![]()
