Road name convention

Hi there

I have not read in the manual of a standard format for naming roads. Everyone has their own idea how to name roads. I propose the following convention, especially one ways and ramps:

to
(route direction) Street name
towards
(2nd route) nearest location
(3rd route) furthest location

Examples

(R104 E) WF Nkomo St towards (Pretoria)

to (M5 S) Steve Biko St towards (M7) Brooklyn (R21) OR Thambo Int

This is especially for ramps. Then if the TTS can’t pronounce the street name properly, then you have a greater hit on hearing the other names. Some roads don’t have route numbers, but the ramp name can refer to the next major location you are heading to.

As we all know, Waze is doing a fairly good job pronouncing our RSA names, but there are many names it completely mess up and you end up missing your turn. But if you include suburb and landmark names, you have a greater chance for directing the user.

I propose this for freeways to primary Street ramps. Then the map will be less cluttered, yet comprehensive.

What do you think?

Hi Gerald,

We have a naming convention already - see the SA Wiki - particularly the numbered routes section.
