This wiki page identifies and outlines regular maintenance tasks that need to take place on the Waze map in Australia.

While the following prescribes a role responsible, tasks can be delegated, with appropriate supervision, to other senior editors.

Country-wide

Yearly review of school zone community schedules

Due Responsible
November, every year All State Managers / (Local Champ, if no SM)

See the wiki page for the yearly management of School Zone Community Schedules.

Maintenance tasks

New South Wales

Seasonal Winter Closures

Due Responsible
May, every year NSW State Manager / (Country Manager, if no SM)

Summary of impacted routes

Why: Real-time closures should be applied to these roads inside a traffic event so that closures are replicated to Google Maps and a push notification can be sent to drivers. The authoritative data source is LiveTraffic.com.

Alpine Operations typically run from the June long weekend, through to the October long weekend each year. Depending on snowfall, the season may occasionally finish earlier, though rarely before the end of September. In 2024, operations finished on 30 September – a week earlier than planned – due to a lack of alpine conditions. - TfNSW

Note: Driving restrictions are already in place on segments but are not 100% accurate.

Maintenance tasks

  • Review LiveTraffic.com for alpine closure incidents
    • Are there any new/old impacted routes to consider
  • Note that closures are clustered over two areas: Perisher and Cabramurra. Add a new traffic event for each. It may be easier to draw a polygon for Perisher, and use the city “Cabramurra”.
  • Add closures for the impacted routes to their respective traffic events
  • Publish the traffic event
  • Update the above summary to make it easier for next year

Yearly NSW public vehicle ferry maintenance

Due Responsible
November, every year NSW State Manager / (Local Champ, if no SM)

Summary of ferries

Note: Below is a convenient list of ferries in NSW, but a source authority should be used to check to add/remove ferries.

Check ferry operating hours

Why: There are numerous public ferries that operate in NSW with operating hours that are subject to change.

Note: Breaks in service that are <= 60 mins are not factored into the operating hours/restrictions, to avoid routing the driver around the ferry, which would outweigh the short wait at the ferry.

Maintenance tasks

  • Review all vehicle ferries in NSW and consider:
    • Are the operation hours correctly applied to the on-ramp segments?
    • Are vehicle ferries mapped as per the USA Ferries wiki article?
    • Do any new/old ferries need to be added/removed to the map?
  • Apply the above changes.
  • Update the above summary to make it easier for next year

Apply closures on NSW public vehicle ferries for 12 month period

Why: There are numerous public vehicle ferries that operate in NSW with regular monthly maintenance periods. Due to the nature of these periods (e.g. First Tue of every month), real-time closures (RTC) are the best tool we have for managing these. Therefore, we bulk add RTC for a 12-month period (e.g. Dec 2025 to Nov 2026) during the above Due month, to the applicable ferries. Closures applied in Waze will also be reflected in Google Maps, to assist their drivers.

Maintenance tasks

  • Update the “NSW Ferry Closures” Traffic Event so the end date is for 30 Nov, the following year (i.e. if it is 2025, change to 2026)
  • Review all public vehicle ferries in NSW and consider:
    • Which ferries have regular monthly maintenance periods that require RTCs? e.g. First Tue of every month.
    • Where a non-operational period is mentioned, is it catered for in “Driving Restrictions” on the loading ramp segment?
    • Are any map comments with resources up to date?
  • Bulk add RTC for a 12-month period (e.g. Dec 2025 to Nov 2026) to the applicable ferries, using the Advanced Closure Script, and tweaking the date each month.
  • Update the above summary to make it easier for next year

Note: When the Waze scheduler becomes available for closures or driving restrictions, this task may become obsolete.
